  • Berdych, Del Potro collide in fourth-round blockbuster

    6/2/12 6:46 PM | Ricky Dimon
Berdych, Del Potro collide in fourth-round blockbuster A huge fourth-round showdown is in the cards for Sunday at Roland Garros. Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin Del Potro are squaring for the likely prize of going up against Roger Federer in the quarterfinals.

Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin Del Potro will be doing battle for the sixth time in their careers at the ATP level and for the third time this season when they meet in round four of the French Open on Sunday.

Del Potro leads the head-to-head series 3-2, including 1-0 on red clay. They have split a pair of semifinal encounters in 2012, with Del Potro cruising 6-3, 6-1 in Rotterdam before Berdych got revenge via a high-quality 7-6(5), 7-6(6) victory last month on the blue clay of Madrid.

Both players are in outstanding form at the moment. With two titles (Marseille and Estoril) to his credit already this year, Del Potro boasts a 36-8 record. So far at Roland Garros he has dismissed, Albert Montanes, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, and Marin Cilic, losing sets to Montanes and Roger-Vasselin in the process.

Berdych is a stellar 34-10 for his 2012 campaign, which includes a title in Montpellier, a quarterfinal at the Australian Open, and a semifinal at the Monte-Carlo Masters in addition to his runner-up performance in Madrid. The seventh-ranked Czech destroyed Dudi Sela and Michael Llodra before outlasting Kevin Anderson 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4.

On paper this is the most intriguing matchup of the entire fourth round and it will almost certainly deliver the highest quality if both players are at 100 percent. However, that may not be the case. Del Potro has been dealing with a slight knee problem ever since Rome two weeks ago and Berdych is coming off a grueling five-setter during which he received multiple thigh massages.

Roles were reversed on Friday. While Del Potro endured relative struggles compared to Berdych in rounds one and two, it was the ninth-ranked Argentine who dominated on Friday. All things being equal for this one, Del Potro in five sets is the pick.

Delpo in FIVE ? Ricky are you high ?
Delpo has been playing through a lot pain. He is not winning this one. He seems to not be able to even reach a 5 setter.

Berdych in 4.

nobody circles like the wagons like Del Potro.

Except for Murray and Isner. Nobody else.

Ricky, I agree with ur pick. Though I think it Delpo will win not be stretched to 5. He will make it in 4.

Strangely, the best 4th round is not on Philippe Chatrier.......

fedexal , 6/3/12 6:40 AM

Berdych gets 1 of the 2 breaks back in 3rd set

tennis2011 , 6/3/12 9:10 PM

match called. Delpo leads two sets to one.

its still a toss up ...if berdy can get the early lead he'l take set 4. may be delpo is the favorite marginally but not really..both play similar tennis to a large extent

vamosrafa , 6/3/12 11:36 PM

Dunno if DelPotro can pull out the win due to his bad knee, also, the fact that he lost just recently to Berdych. We'll see.

Del Potro will win this in 4 or 5- he will upset Federer too. Most likely 4 not 5.

MAGICJOHNSON76 , 6/4/12 2:12 AM

Cmon Delpo! U gotta win this.

abhirf , 6/4/12 3:13 AM

Fed must be pleased to see the slow-motion Delpo wining this...

natashao , 6/4/12 2:37 PM

Congrats Delpo! I knew all the way that u r gonna make it. VAMOS!

abhirf , 6/4/12 2:42 PM

Del potro is the most dangerous player no doubt

tennis2011 , 6/4/12 2:46 PM

VAMOS DELPO!!

atul1985 , 6/4/12 2:53 PM

natashao, even this slow motion Delpo can prove dangerous if Fed isnt on his A game.

Too bad that both of my favs gonna face each other and one will be eliminated.

It's not only that Delpo is slow, which is most likely due to that knee injury, but I also see little enthusiasm in him...there is no sparkle in his eyes: he looks unhappy on the court unlike Fed who is all smile and seems pretty facetious in his post match interviews...:) I am actually enjoying this relaxed version of Fed...:)

Today Berdy helped the case with his numerous unusual UEs and rather anemic play...Fed won't be that generous...I honestly do not see this Delpo beating Fed...

natashao , 6/4/12 3:59 PM

Hats off to Ricky. I really thought Berdych was winning this one.

Emiliano55 , 6/4/12 5:51 PM

Congrats to Delpo for the win - I just hope his knee holds up. Cannot see him beating Fed though.

schatz , 6/4/12 7:02 PM

I have to agree with schatz. I think the knee is hampering Delpo's movement. He hasn't been able to beat Fed this year and even a subpar Fed should be able to take him out in the quarterfinals. It's true that he does not look happy on the court.
