Simon, Wawrinka battle for round of 16 berth Gilles Simon is set to take on fellow seed Stanislas Wawrinka for a place among the final 16 at the French Open. The players are joined in third-round action by world No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who meets Italy’s Fabio Fognini.

    (11) Gilles Simon vs. (18) Stanislas Wawrinka

World No. 12 Gilles Simon looks to level a 2-1 series deficit against world No. 21 Stanislas Wawrinka. Friday marks their first clay-court meeting since 2003.

Simon survived an extended second-round battle with American wildcard Brian Baker. The 27-year-old Frenchman lost a two-sets-to-love lead, but regrouped to win the final set, 6-0. He is bidding for his second round of 16 berth in Paris.

Wawrinka dismissed Spain's Pablo Andujar in the second round, 7-6(3), 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1. The 27-year-old Swiss will attempt to book his third consecutive round of 16 at the tournament.

    (5) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Fabio Fognini

World No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga leads world No. 45 Fabio Fognini 1-0 in the series, having won their only previous meeting at the 2011 Masters 1000 Canada.

Tsonga is through to the third round after beating Germany’s Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in four sets. The 27-year-old Frenchman converted nine of 15 break points en route to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory in two hours and 35 minutes. He remains on track to reach his third round of 16 in Paris.

Fognini came through a five-set match against 28th seed Viktor Troicki in the second round. The 25-year-old Italian trailed two-sets-to-one before taking the final set 8-6.

What a match!!!!

rafaisthebest , 6/1/12 5:02 PM

I expect this match to be a long one, it certainly looks like one. Matches against Simon, especially on clay, are usually long ones, as he's so good at his counterpunching game on the slower surfaces. The one who benefits from this is Tsonga, who has already won his match and waiting for the winner of this match in the next round.

luckystar , 6/1/12 5:23 PM

Stan is a tough opponent, he always gives the top players a good fight, even beaten Murray at the USO 2010. It'll be tough for Simon to win this match.

luckystar , 6/1/12 5:48 PM

I have never see Wawa play this well, he's schooling Simon out there..........

rafaisthebest , 6/1/12 7:08 PM

Wawa advances he gets past Tsonga.........................Nole has a clear run to the final.............

rafaisthebest , 6/1/12 7:14 PM

this can still go either way wawrinka is just 1 break up he can play 1 bad game and they will be back on serve

tennis2011 , 6/1/12 7:15 PM

'stan the man' to win this one.

abhirf , 6/1/12 7:17 PM

I did not expect Wawa to last 5 sets..........but he is still creaming those backhands, means his concentration hasn't wavered

rafaisthebest , 6/1/12 7:22 PM

Stan now 2 breaks up in 5th set

tennis2011 , 6/1/12 7:23 PM

Wawa it is..............

rafaisthebest , 6/1/12 7:28 PM

Wawrinka won

tennis2011 , 6/1/12 7:29 PM

Well Stan did play very well and beat Murray in four sets at the USO 2010. He certainly can play very well if he wants to and can push Nole or Rafa in their matches.

luckystar , 6/1/12 7:37 PM

A repeat of last yr R16 Wawa vs Tsonga.

abhirf , 6/1/12 7:43 PM

Even though I like Simon I have to say that Wawrinka played great and deserved the win, so congrats to him. That backhand of his was firing on all cylinders today and was beautiful to watch.

schatz , 6/1/12 7:51 PM

Yeah, he does have a beautiful backhand!!!!.....reminds me of Gasquet's a bit.
