  • Cilic, Ferrero square off in French Open second round

Cilic, Ferrero square off in French Open second round A blockbuster second-round matchup is set for Wednesday, as Marin Cilic is going up against Juan Carlos Ferrero. The winner will run into either Juan Martin Del Potro or Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Marin Cilic and Juan Carlos Ferrero will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they do battle in round two of the French Open on Wednesday. Cilic dominated their only previous encounter 6-3, 6-4 three years ago on the hard courts of Cincinnati.

Both players are rounding into form after enduring injury-plagued starts to their 2012 campaigns. Cilic is finally above .500 at 9-8 for the season after recently finishing runner-up to Philipp Kohlschreiber on the clay courts of Munich. The 21st-seeded Croat rolled over Daniel Munoz-De La Nava 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in his Roland Garros opener on Sunday.

Ferrero did not win a tournament match the entire year until the Rome Masters earlier this month. The 32-year-old Spaniard advanced two rounds in Rome before falling to Roger Federer then beat Robin Haase in a third-set tiebreaker in Nice before losing to Thomaz Bellucci. Ferrero, who won the French Open in 2003, dismissed Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday.

The economical victory was much-needed for Ferrero, whose body can no longer take long matches in succession. He will be well-rested for this showdown and clay obviously favors him more than it does Cilic. Look for this to go the distance, with Ferrero scoring a minor upset.
