  • Roddick, Mahut clash in French Open first round

    5/27/12 5:15 AM | Ricky Dimon
Roddick, Mahut clash in French Open first round Andy Roddick hopes to avoid further clay-court disappointment as he goes up against France's own Nicolas Mahut on Sunday at Roland Garros. The winner may soon be in line for a third-round meeting with Roger Federer.

Andy Roddick and Nicolas Mahut will be going head-to-head for the fifth time in their careers when they do battle in round one of the French Open on Sunday.

Roddick has won all four of their previous encounters, but they have never faced each other on clay. Two of their meetings went to three sets, including a 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(2) thriller in the 2007 Queen's Club final.

Four years since he last took on Mahut, Roddick seems to be wearing down at 29 years old. The American has been plagued by injuries and he is a mere 7-9 for his 2012 campaign. Roddick has not yet played an ATP clay-court tournament this season, but he showed up for the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf and did not win a single set in three matches.

Mahut is a mediocre 7-8 at the ATP level this year. The 30-year-old Frenchman has also played sparingly on clay, having appeared in just one Challenger event (a quarterfinal showing two weeks ago in Bordeaux). Mahut is a horrendous 2-10 lifetime at Roland Garros, while Roddick is an even 9-9.

Don't be fooled by Roddick's relatively respectable .500 record in Paris. The world No. 33 has endured four unceremonious first-round exits in nine appearances and he has made it past the third round only once. Mahut will have home-court advantage and he should oust a rusty opponent in four sets.
