  • Ferrer takes on Simon in Rome third round

    5/17/12 4:35 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ferrer takes on Simon in Rome third round David Ferrer will do battle with Frenchman Gilles Simon for a spot in the Rome Masters quarterfinals.

It’s the world No. 6 against the world No. 12 in this third-round showdown. Spain’s David Ferrer has had a fantastic season so far, with the exception of a fluke second-round loss at the Monte Carlo Masters. The Spaniard made the final in Barcelona and the quarters last week in Madrid.

Gilles Simon has likewise had an impressive European clay swing so far. The Frenchman took the title in Bucharest and had an impressive semifinal showing in Monte Carlo.

Ferrer faced down his countryman Fernando Verdasco in the second round, playing solid clay-court tennis for the straight-set victory. Simon had a bit more difficulty, needing three sets to dispatch Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Ferrer has historically been the more consistent of the two and the Spaniard has the added advantage of a day’s rest between his second and third-round matches.

Prediction – Ferrer in straight sets.

Yes, whatever is happening to Simon? Ferrer is great but not THAT great. Maybe this crazy wind is bothering him?

danica , 5/17/12 1:53 PM

Maybe, but still don't think I would've expected him to drop a set 6-0. :S

That's more like it: Simon serving for the second set.

Two horrid games in a row. First Ferrer making crazy errors, and now Simon broken at love serving for the set. Conditions are making good play VERY difficult, I suppose.
