• Seppi continues Rome campaign against Wawrinka

Seppi continues Rome campaign against Wawrinka Andreas Seppi will try to keep his Rome run alive on Thursday. A spot in the quarterfinals is on the line as he faces Stanislas Wawrinka.

Stanislas Wawrinka and Andreas Seppi will be meeting for the eighth time in their careers when they clash in round three of the Internazioanli BNL d'Italia on Thursday.

Wawrinka leads the head-to-head series 5-2 but it is tied at one apiece on clay. The Swiss, with home-court advantage in a clay-court Davis Cup rubber three years ago, rolled 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. They most recently faced each other at the 2010 Valencia event, where Wawrinka prevailed 7-6(2), 7-5.

Seppi is playing in front of his home crowd this time around and he has already taken advantage of it. The 30th-ranked Italian ousted Denis Istomin in three sets then--amidst a wild atmosphere on Wednesday--upset world No. 10 John Isner 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-5. Seppi is a solid 16-13 for his 2012 campaign.

Wawrinka has matched his performance from last week in Madrid, where he advanced two rounds before losing to Novak Djokovic. The 20th-ranked Swiss battled past Robin Haase in three sets then easily dismissed No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-1 in the second round. He is a stellar 19-9 for the season.

Seppi is back on the same court for this one and the fans will once again be in a boisterous mood, to say the least. However, Wawrinka is an accomplished dirt player and Seppi is coming off an emotional encounter that lasted two hours and 50 minutes. Wawrinka in three sets is the pick.

You have to hand it to Seppi; he has shown what a fighter he is and to have back to back wins against players who have much bigger weapons than he does is a true testament to his grit and heart.

The crowd help him I know but it was one of the most emotional matches I have had the pleasure to watch. I would have been behind the sofa if that had been Rafa :) Poor Stan - so many match points. I don't know how Seppi kept pulling himself back into the match in the 3rd set - truly amazing.
