  • Tomic and Stepanek kick off action in Rome

Tomic and Stepanek kick off action in Rome Aussie teen Bernard Tomic will look to improve on his first-round Madrid result as he takes the court on Monday for the Rome Masters.

    Bernard Tomic vs. Santiago Giraldo

Bernard Tomic had a great start to the 2012 season, with a good showing in the round of 16 at the Australian Open. The Aussie’s clay-court season has been less than impressive, however. Tomic’s best result on the dirt came in Munich, where he made the quarterfinals. Otherwise, it has been a series of first and second round defeats. Tomic is currently ranked 32nd in the world.

Colombian Santiago Giraldo is a clay-court specialist who spends much of his time there. He is ranked 51st in the world, but he still spends some of his season on the Challenger circuit.

Prediction – Giraldo is a tough customer on clay. The Colombian for the win

Radek Stepanek vs. Juan Ignacio Chela

This will be a battle of the veterans, as the Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek takes on Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina.

Stepanek hasn’t been especially good on clay this year, unsurprising as the veteran still prefers to play serve-and-volley tennis. But Chela hasn’t been impressive on any surface recently. The Argentine is 6-9 for the season – and half of those wins came in Vina Del Mar, where he had his one good result of the season.

Prediction - The surface favors Chela, but Stepanek has generally had better form. Stepanek in straight sets.

Comments

Ha ha, this Tomic is toying with Giraldo, making him run all over the place. This Tomic can give Giraldo all the different looks and makes Giraldo looks so one dimensional. Tomic is such an intelligent player.
