• Del Potro, Dolgopolov collide in Madrid quarterfinals

Del Potro, Dolgopolov collide in Madrid quarterfinals A place in the Madrid semifinals is at stake as Juan Martin Del Potro goes up against Alexandr Dolgopolov on Friday. The winner will clash with either Rafael Nadal or Tomas Berdych.

Juan Martin Del Potro and Alexandr Dolgopolov will be squaring off for the third time in their careers and for the second time this season when they go head-to-head in the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open on Friday.

Del Potro has won both of their previous encounters, including a 6-3, 7-6(5) decision three months ago in Dubai. They also faced each other last year in Indian Wells, where Del Potro prevailed 7-6(3), 6-3. This meeting marks their first clay-court collision.

Dolgopolov is playing much better tennis now than he was from February through April. The 20th-ranked Ukrainian advanced to the third round in Monte Carlo and he has wins this week over Pablo Andujar, Andreas Seppi, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Consecutive three-set wins leave Dolgopolov's 2012 record at 15-9.

Only a few men, however, are playing as well as Del Potro at the moment. The 11th-ranked Argentine successfully defended his Estoril title last weekend and he is an awesome 30-6 for the season. Del Potro has not dropped a set this week in wins over Florian Mayer, Mikhail Youzhny, and Marin Cilic.

Dolgopolov will have to feed his opponent a steady diet of funky backhand slices, and the relatively low-bouncing surface will help his cause in that effort. Still, Del Potro has a considerable edge in current form and he should get the job done in straight sets.

Delpo luking really gud here. The conditions suit him really well. Wont be surprised if he goes on to win the tournament. Its really gr8 to see him back in form.

If it's's even more infuriating being a fan of Dolgo than it is of Andy! He's got all the weapons to slay giants. He moves around the court as fast as a little air born sprite, he has a whipping forehand, a very trixxy serve and he could slice and dice as an Olympic sport! And yet, and yet, he cannot seem to string two points together.
Today his serve was right off but also he looked lacklustre. Perhaps he too is fed up with the courts.

31% 1st serves for dolgopolov.... (27% in the 1st set)

That's got to be a new low.
