  • Tsonga, Harrison lock horns again in Madrid

    5/9/12 6:41 AM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga, Harrison lock horns again in Madrid Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will begin his tournament quest on Wednesday in Madrid. Up first for Tsonga is Harrison, whom the Frenchman defeated in a Davis Cup rubber last month.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Ryan Harrison will be squaring off for the second time in their careers and for the second time this season when they collide in round two of the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday. Their only previous encounter came in Davis Cup last month, when Tsonga--with home-court advantage on the clay courts of Monte Carlo--scored a 7-5, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory.

Tsonga snagged the No. 4 seed in Madrid thanks to Andy Murray's absence and he received one of eight first-round byes. The fifth-ranked Frenchman is coming off a second-round loss in Munich to Tommy Haas but he is still a solid 21-8 for his 2012 campaign.

Harrison is a respectable 13-11 for the season after upending Sergiy Stakhovsky in two tiebreakers on Monday. The 20-year-old American has plenty of talent, as displayed by consecutive fourth-round showings in Indian Wells.

This will be tough for Tsonga, but the blue clay surface is Madrid is playing fast and he should be able to capitalize. Look for the world No. 5 to survive in two competitive sets.
