• Djokovic back on the blue stuff against Wawrinka

    5/9/12 10:04 PM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic back on the blue stuff against Wawrinka Novak Djokovic will continue his Madrid campaign on Thursday. Standing in his way of a spot in the quarterfinals is Stanislas Wawrinka.

Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka will be squaring off for the 12th time in their careers when they collide once again in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Thursday.

Djokovic is dominating the head-to-head series 9-2, including 4-1 on clay (his only clay-court loss came via retirement in the first career meeting between the two players). They most recently faced each other twice during last year's clay-court season, with Djokovic rolling 6-4, 6-4 in Monte Carlo and 6-4, 6-1 in Rome.

Wawrinka, however, is looking like he wants to turn the tide. The 21st-ranked Swiss reached the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo and the semis last week in Estoril and he is now 17-8 for his 2012 campaign. Wawrinka beat Olivier Rochus in straight sets on Tuesday then turned in a stellar performance to destroy Jurgen Melzer 6-1, 6-4 in round two.

Djokovic earned a first-round bye as the top seed before struggling through his opener--a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Spanish qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver. The world No. 1 and defending champion is looking to bounce back from a blowout loss to Rafael Nadal that ended a tough week for him in Monte Carlo.

After getting past Gimeno-Traver, Djokovic had this to say about the blue clay: "This has no similarities with red clay; it's totally different. When you slide on red clay you can feel when you stop. Here you are always slipping. This is not tennis. Either I need football shoes of some advice on how to play on this court.

"I don't know how it will turn out in my next match. But I'm here to win."

Wawarinka's current form suggests this one could be competitive and the surface is likely to be an equalizer. Still, Djokovic sounds like a man on a mission and he should raise his level to get the job done in two tight sets.

I do hope you're right, but there is still a lot to be played.

I DO NOT want to see another set going 5-7 after 5-2.

Good match...
Wava was painting the lines with his magnificent backhands ( definitely, the MOST beautiful BH on tour )... but Nole was adding the pressure little by little...
He had problems again with court... that fall was freighting but luckily it wasn't serious...
Very good win also for Tipsa... squeezing the victory from Simon...
Funny... umpire speaks French... and no warning for Simon... who was cursing loudly
Blu show is on... just hope we see no injury there...
