  • Djokovic begins Madrid defense vs. Gimeno-Traver

    5/8/12 4:46 AM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic begins Madrid defense vs. Gimeno-Traver Novak Djokovic will kick off his Madrid campaign on Tuesday. Up first for the top seed is qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Novak Djokovic and Daniel Gimeno-Traver will be squaring off for the third time in their careers when they do battle in round two of the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday night.

Amazingly enough, the head-to-head series is tied up at one apiece and Gimeno-Traver leads it 1-0 on clay. However, that meeting came way back in 2006 in Barcelona, where Gimeno-Traver prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. A more indicative result graced the scoreboard at the 2010 Australian Open, with Djokovic dominating 7-5, 6-3, 6-2.

While the run is likely to end here for Gimeno-Traver, it has already been a stellar week. The 137th-ranked Spaniard qualified for the main draw then earned his first ATP-level victory of 2012 by defeating Victor Hanescu 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 on Monday. Gimeno-Traver had previously been 0-5.

Djokovic is the top seed and defending champion (d. Rafael Nadal) in Madrid. The world No. 1 is coming off a runner-up finish in Monte Carlo, where a week plagued by his grandfather's death culminated with a blowout loss to Nadal in the final. Djokovic then withdrew from his hometown event in Belgrade.

Although he may not be in overwhelming form at the moment, Djokovic is still an outstanding 24-3 for the season. Count on the Serb dismissing Gimeno-Traver in easy straight sets.

Schatz,
thank you!! You are a sweetheart ;). I was really frustrated with that official website and didn't quite had the time to look around.
Thanks one more time ;)

danica , 5/8/12 6:39 PM

Nole very flat right now. This might actually go to 3 sets.

cherylmurray , 5/8/12 7:48 PM

goodness gracious. A double fault into the double break. Oi.

cherylmurray , 5/8/12 7:50 PM

What's up with Novak? This is Gimeno-Traver for goodness' sakes....................

rafaisthebest , 5/8/12 7:51 PM

Still, Novak will re-group and win........but still, this court is going to throw up some major scalps this week................

rafaisthebest , 5/8/12 7:53 PM

That was a miserable set from Nole. Wowee.

cherylmurray , 5/8/12 8:03 PM

What on earth's up with Nole? Travers who?

deuce , 5/8/12 8:07 PM

Oh great. The grounds crew over-watered the courts again. Nole slipping all over the place.

I'm sorry, but that is unacceptable.

cherylmurray , 5/8/12 8:08 PM

Yes Cheryl, that's so bad :( Completely alters how it plays too.

deuce , 5/8/12 8:12 PM

Smurf clay, terrible advertising boards placement, ugly soulless court, amateur grounds-people.................shame

rafaisthebest , 5/8/12 8:12 PM

Yes but more importantly how are the ball girls?

#tiriac'scircus

agfmilos , 5/8/12 8:13 PM

they've just been normal ball kids so far.

And Mo just screwed Nole out of a point.

cherylmurray , 5/8/12 8:16 PM

The court is like a skating rink. Nole has slipped at least 4 times in the past 15 minutes. UGH. I hope nobody gets hurt....

cherylmurray , 5/8/12 8:19 PM

The commies are saying because it is so slippery it is difficult to turn defence into attack.................oh well, will be interesting to hear what the Rafa-haters say because this has been Rafa's beef all along..................

rafaisthebest , 5/8/12 8:22 PM

Some players are rock solid on this surface.Surprisingly Milos Raonic had no difficulty.Djokovic may need to change his shoes.

stratocast51 , 5/8/12 8:26 PM

My issue is that the clay courts in Madrid have been poor since the tournament began. Why spend extra money dyeing the stupid thing blue when there are WAY more pressing problems. Get some grounds people who know how to rake and water the court for crying out loud.

cherylmurray , 5/8/12 8:28 PM

^^^^ yep that's what Simon and others are saying. Tiriac is the lead clown at the Madrid circus.

Will probably play to the hard servers like Milos.

If any tournament should be traditional clay, it should be Madrid.

agfmilos , 5/8/12 8:33 PM

Break Nole.

cherylmurray , 5/8/12 8:35 PM

Some players are rock solid on this surface.Surprisingly Milos Raonic had no difficulty.......

stratocast51, 5/8/12 8:26 PM

Not that much of a surprise if you know the difference between a hard court and a clay court and this Madrid smurf court is NOT a clay court.............., as every knowledgeable person has opined....

rafaisthebest , 5/8/12 8:47 PM

''To me that's not tennis. Either I come out with football shoes or I invite Chuck Norris to advise me how to play on this court,'' said Djokovic, who like Rafael Nadal has been critical of the new-look surface. ''Center court is impossible to move on. I hit five balls throughout the whole match. With everything else, I was just trying to keep the ball in the court.''

nemanja230690 , 5/8/12 10:26 PM

It was obvious he was not able to move. Maybe he needs a bit of an adjustment. Gimeno-Traver went through qualifying rounds and was more accommodated and at ease there. Also, he seemed to be watching his step as to not get injured. Really, in the Olympic year, making a court that could potentially ruin players is out of minds. I just don't want to see anyone getting hurt there.

danica , 5/8/12 11:09 PM

That Chuck Norris quote is hilarious but the court sounds dangerous so no laughing matter. That stupid chair umpire should be fired! Djoker asked him to get off his chair to check a mark, which hawkeye confirmed was out, and he said it was too late. It wasn't late and it was a mark on the court, not a replay challenge. That's at least the 4th stupid call I've seen him make this year.

chr18 , 5/8/12 11:54 PM

How Manolo Santana could have been a party to this stupid decision to have blue clay in Madrid is beyond me. Like someone else said on another thread I just hope no-one gets injured during this tournament.

It was interesting to hear Novak's comments as he is someone who relies on his movement a lot. It will no doubt affect Rafa the same way - if he loses against Davydenko today I won't be unhappy to be honest. He has more important tournaments to be healthy for than this farce in Madrid.

schatz , 5/9/12 1:08 PM

Yes, I think Mohamed just lost his concentration a little there, how much quicker did he want Nole to be in challenging the call. It was a straight forward challenge. Some tennis rules just make me angry because they are so subjective, because another umpire would have granted the challenge.

nadline , 5/9/12 1:27 PM

Guys, even the chair umpires are confused...............the blue colour and the court condition is fooling them into thinking it's a hard court! That's the only explanation I can think of for Mohamed's mistake...................

rafaisthebest , 5/9/12 2:31 PM

Where is Johan Lindahl? Isn't he on an expedition in Madrid hunting all the "anti-blue clay whiners?" I expect to see a full article by him on Nole's "whining"!!!

C'mon Johan, don't disappoint.................

rafaisthebest , 5/9/12 2:55 PM

^^ you're expecting even-handedness ? :-)

chlorostoma , 5/9/12 3:26 PM

I've seen Mohammed tell Andy the ball was in and Andy has accepted this, but hawkeye has later shown the ball to be out. Happened more than once. I think Mo. needs new specs and possibly a new perspective....;)

deuce , 5/9/12 3:46 PM

I usually trust anything by Mohammad, he is that good imo. But this call was really ridiculous. I am happy Nole didn't fuss too much over that. In fact, maybe that made him dig a bit deeper.
