  • Cilic hopes to maintain hot streak at Madrid Masters

    5/8/12 3:30 AM | Ricky Dimon
Cilic hopes to maintain hot streak at Madrid Masters Marin Cilic is back on the court two days after finishing runner-up in Munich. Cilic will go up against Albert Montanes in his Madrid opener.

(WC) Albert Montanes vs. Marin Cilic

It had been slow going for Cilic this season because of physical problems, but he is heating up heading into round one of the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Croat is an even 6-6 for his 2012 campaign after reaching the Munich final, where he lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber on Sunday.

Up first for Cilic is a second career meeting with Montanes, who took their only previous encounter 6-4, 6-4 two years ago on the clay courts of Monte Carlo. Montanes also started this season slow, but he made it to the third round in Barcelona and to the quarterfinals in Estoril. Based on the surface and home-court advantage, look for the wild card to pull off an upset.

    (16) Alexandr Dolgopolov vs. Pablo Andujar

Dolgopolov and Andujar will be facing each other for the first time in their careers at the ATP level when they clash during first-round action on Tuesday. However, they have gone head-to-head twice on the Challenger circuit. A pair of clay-court matches in 2009 were split; Andujar prevailed 7-5, 7-6(1) then Dolgopolov rolled 6-4, 6-2.

Andujar has seemingly played just about every week in 2012 and he has a decent 14-11 record to show for his efforts. The 37th-ranked Spaniard is coming off a semifinal in Belgrade and he won the Casablanca title last month. Dolgopolov is a modest 12-9 for the season after losing to Novak Djokovic in the Monte Carlo third round. This could go either way, but the 16th-seeded Ukrainian in three sets is the pick.
