Baghdatis battles Haas, Cilic faces Youzhny A pair of blockbuster quarterfinal matchups are on tap for Friday in Munich. Marcos Baghdatis, Tommy Haas, Marin Cilic, and Mikhail Youzhny are all looking for spots in the last four.

(WC) Tommy Haas vs. (8) Marcos Baghdatis

Haas will continue his wild-card campaign at the BMW Open on Friday against Baghdatis. The 34-year-old German has turned back the clock by treating his home crowd to some impressive tennis so far this week. He crushed countryman Michael Berrer 6-0, 6-2 in round one then disposed of No. 1 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 6-4 in 59 minutes on Wednesday. Haas is now 6-4 at the ATP level in 2012.

This quarterfinal clash will be the second career encounter between Haas and Baghdatis and the first in almost seven years. On the indoor hard courts of Basel in 2005, Baghdatis cruised 6-2, 6-3. The 39th-ranked Cypriot has already worked hard in Munich, scoring a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Tobias Kamke before overcoming Dustin Brown 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Baghdatis is an impressive 17-9 for the season. Based on form this week, looking for Haas' run to keep going after three tough sets.

    (3) Marin Cilic vs. (6) Mikhail Youzhny

Cilic and Youzhny will be squaring off for the eighth time in their careers when they battle for a semifinal spot on Friday. Youzhny leads the head-to-head series 5-2, including 2-0 on clay. They faced each other in the Munich final two years ago, with Youzhny triumphing 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. They also collided last season on the red stuff in Hamburg, where Youzhny prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(6). Cilic, however, took their most recent encounter 6-3, 6-4 last fall in St. Petersburg,

Youzhny has dealt with injuries in 2012 but he is an outstanding 12-4 for the year. The 36th-ranked Russian booked his spot in this matchup with hard-fought wins over Philipp Petzschner and Santiago Giraldo. Cilic earned a first-round bye as the No. 3 seed then raced past Matthias Bachinger 6-3, 6-2 in his opener. The 24th-ranked Croat, also plagued by physical problems, is 4-5 in 2012. Cilic should have plenty left in the tank to so look for him to get the job done in three sets.
