Kohlschreiber faces Gulbis at BMW Open Philipp Kohlschreiber opens in Munich against Ernests Gulbis on Thursday. Bernard Tomic and Potito Starace are also looking for a place in the quarterfinals.

Ernests Gulbis vs. (4) Philipp Kohlschreiber

Gulbis and Kohlschreiber will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they meet in the second round of the BMW Open on Thursday afternoon. Their only previous encounter also came during the clay-court swing, with Kohlschreiber dominating 6-1, 6-3 in the 2009 Monte Carlo first round.

Kohlschreiber is beginning his week after getting a bye as the No. 4 seed. The 34th-ranked German is an impressive 15-8 for the season and is coming off a second-round showing in Monte Carlo. Gulbis is 6-8 at the ATP level in 2012 and had not won a tournament match since February until he beat Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday. Based on current form and home-court advantage, count on Kohlschreiber getting the win in straight sets.

    (5) Bernard Tomic vs. Potito Starace

Starace and Tomic will also be squaring off for the second time in their careers on Thursday in Munich. They faced each other three years ago in round one of the Australian Open, where a 16-year-old Tomic treated the crowd to a 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(6) victory.

Tomic is a much improved player at 19 years old, but Starace has the surface advantage this time. The Italian ousted David Goffin 7-6(3), 6-3 on Tuesday while Tomic eased past Olivier Rochus 6-4, 6-3 on Monday. Current form favors Tomic so he should get the job done in three sets, but Starace will make this competitive on the slow stuff.
