  • Tsonga begins Munich campaign against Haas

Tsonga begins Munich campaign against Haas Jo-Wilfried Tsonga begins his quest as the top seed in Munich on Wednesday. He faces a tough opener against veteran Tommy Haas.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tommy Haas will be squaring off for the third time in their careers when they do battle in round two of the BMW Open on Wednesday afternoon.

The head-to-head series is tied up at one win apiece and they have never faced each other on clay. Haas won their first encounter 6-3, 7-6(3) on the grass courts of Halle in 2009 before Tsonga got revenge one season later with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 third-round victory at the Australian Open.

Haas is still plugging away nicely at 34 years old. The German is down at No. 134 in the world mainly due to physical problems, but he is a solid 5-4 at the ATP level this season. Haas, who got a wild card into this event, kicked off his week with a 6-0, 6-2 blowout of Michael Berrer on Tuesday.

Tsonga is a respectable 21-7 for his 2012 campaign, which includes a title in Doha and a quarterfinal appearance in Miami. The fifth-ranked Frenchman is still trying to find his footing on clay. He won a Davis Cup rubber against Ryan Harrison but lost the clinching point to the USA against John Isner. Tsonga advanced two rounds two weeks ago in Monte Carlo before succumbing to countryman Gilles Simon.

Haas looked good against Berrer and even though he is not at his best on the slow stuff, this surface gives him his best shot at Tsonga. Look for the top seed to survive in straights, but both sets should be competitive.
