  • Young and Benneteau in Monte Carlo first round

    4/15/12 10:43 PM | Cheryl Murray
Young and Benneteau in Monte Carlo first round American Donald Young and French veteran Julien Benneteau will take the court on the first full day of main draw play.

    Donald Young vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu

American Donald Young, ranked 45th in the world, had a big breakthrough last summer. After struggling to get a foothold in the main tour, Young finally got t a tour final in Washington DC. He followed that up with a round of 16 result at the US Open and had a good run during the Asian swing. Unfortunately for the American, his good form has not followed him into the 2012 season.

He has won just two matches in nine tournaments and comes into Monte Carlo off a first-round loss in Miami to world No. 148 David Goffin. He will get a crack at his third win on the season against Paul-Henri Mathieu, the one-time world No. 12 whose ranking has dipped to 394th in the world. Mathieu received a wild card into the event and comes in off a Challenger event in Morocco.

Prediction – Mathieu in 3 sets.

    Julien Benneteau vs. Marcel Granollers

This could be an entertaining first-round clash. Julien Benneteau is ranked 31st in the world, and will play with the support of the Monte Carlo crowd. Marcel Granollers sits at No. 26 in the world and comes onto his favored clay surface.

Granollers hasn’t had exceptional results this year, but he’s only played one clay court event in Acapulco which resulted in a disappointing second-round ouster. Benneteau had a much better start to the season, but all of his good results came on hard courts.

    Prediction – Benneteau in 3.
