  • Fish faces Monaco in Sony Ericsson Open quarters

    3/28/12 8:28 PM | Ricky Dimon
Fish faces Monaco in Sony Ericsson Open quarters Huge opportunities await Mardy Fish and Juan Monaco on Thursday in Miami as they clash in a surprising quarterfinal. The winner will go up against either Novak Djokovic or David Ferrer.

Mardy Fish and Juan Monaco will be squaring off for the fifth time in their careers when they do battle in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open on Thursday.

The head-to-head series is all tied up at two apiece, including 1-1 on hard courts. Their first meeting came seven years ago at the Australian Open, where Fish prevailed 9-7 in the fifth set. They most recently faced each other last fall at the Paris Masters, with Monaco advancing when Fish retired after three games in the third set.

Monaco was surprisingly productive late in 2012 on indoor hard courts and he has carried over the momentum into this season. The 21st-ranked Argentine is 11-4 for the year and so far this fortnight he has defeated Yen-Hsun Lu, Gael Monfils, and Andy Roddick.

Fish was slow to heat up this season after big results in 2010 and 2011, but he seems to be finding his game in Miami. The eighth-ranked American is 7-4 on the year following victories over Frank Dancevic, Kevin Anderson, and Nicolas Almagro.

The key for Fish will be keeping points short by controlling play with his first serve, because Monaco has been ruthless from the baseline during this event. Monaco will have huge support as the last remaining Argentine in the draw and that should be a factor in what could be a three-set victory.

He's playing nicely while Fish is not really into the match. Brad Gilbert just predicted that Fish still has some 37% (?!) chance (if I heard him correctly), of winning this match.

Gosh, totally uninspired play by Fish.

Monaco has got the bit between his teeth. He is on fire.

Just beat Fish in straight sets, and today is his birthday.
