  • Roddick, Almagro take the court at Sony Ericsson Open

    3/23/12 11:45 PM | Ricky Dimon
Roddick, Almagro take the court at Sony Ericsson Open Andy Roddick and Nicolas Almagro will contest their Miami openers on Friday. They are set for respective meetings with Gilles Muller and David Goffin.

Gilles Muller vs. (31) Andy Roddick

Muller and Roddick will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers when they do battle in round two of the Sony Ericsson Open on Saturday afternoon. Their most memorable encounter came in the first round of the 2005 U.S. Open, with Muller stunning Roddick 7-6(4), 7-6(8), 7-6(1). Roddick, however, leads the head-to-head series 2-1; they have not faced each other since Memphis in 2008.

At 29 years old, Roddick is toiling down at No. 34 in the world. The American is an even 5-5 for the season and he is coming off a third-round Indian Wells loss to Tomas Berdych. Muller is 4-7 for his 2012 after outlasting Alex Bogomolov in a third-set tiebreaker on Thursday. An upset here is very possible, but Roddick in three sets is the pick.

    (12) Nicolas Almagro vs. (Q) David Goffin

Almagro is picking up where he left off in 2011, having compiled a stellar 20-6 record so far this year. The 12th-ranked Spaniard once again prospered during the Golden Swing, which included a title in Sao Paulo and a runner-up finish in Buenos Aires. Almagro has not yet lost an opening match at any tournament in 2012.

Up first for the No. 12 seed is Goffin, who is already in the midst of arguably his best week at the ATP level. The 21-year-old Belgian qualified for the main draw then dismissed Donald Young in straight sets on Thursday. Goffin has accumulated four of his six career ATP match victories this season. The underdog will use his speed and consistency to make this one competitive, but count on Almagro advancing in straights.
