Tomic and Karlovic begin Miami Masters bids Young Australian hopeful Bernard Tomic will try to rebound from a first round loss in Indian Wells as he takes on Sergiy Stakhovsky.

    Bernard Tomic vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky

Aussie teen Bernard Tomic had a promising start to the 2012 season. The world No. 36 made the semifinals in Brisbane, where he lost to Andy Murray, followed by a round of 16 showing at the Australian Open.

His results following his run in Australia have not been nearly as encouraging. The Aussie’s best result came at Delray Beach, where he reached the quarterfinals. He recently crashed out of Indian Wells in the first round.

Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine has had a dismal start to the year. He has not yet managed to win back-to-back matches in 2012 and his record sits at 5-8 on the season.

    Prediction- Tomic in straight sets.

    Ivo Karlovic vs. Lukasz Kubot

Towering Croat Ivo Karlovic cannot be pleased to be playing Poland’s Lukasz Kubot in the first round of a second straight tournament. Kubot completely dismantled Karlovic in their first round match in Indian Wells last week, with the Pole winning 6-4, 6-2.

Kubot also has two other wins over Karlovic, one at Wimbledon last year and a second on the clay courts in Belgrade back in 2009.

This will be a tough ask for Karlovic. Kubot seems to be unfazed by the Croat’s big serve, which is truly Karlovic’s best and sometimes only weapon. Karlovic will have to serve exceptionally well to get the win, but he’ll have a better chance with the quicker courts in Miami.

    Prediction – Kubot in 3.

Kubot served for the match at 5-4 in the 3rd set and choked. Karlovic is the easiest player in probably the top 300 to hold serve against.
