  • Isner, Anderson square off in Delray Beach semifinals

    3/3/12 5:33 AM | Ricky Dimon
Isner, Anderson square off in Delray Beach semifinals The second semifinal on Saturday in Delray Beach promises to be a big-serving affair as John Isner goes up against Kevin Anderson. The winner will be a heavy favorite to capture the title.

John Isner and Kevin Anderson will be meeting for the sixth time in their careers when they do battle in the semifinals of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Saturday night.

After facing each other numerous times in college, their head-to-head series in the pros stands at 3-2 in Isner's favor. The 6'9'' American won a pair of 2010 encounters in Indian Wells and Atlanta, but Anderson won their most clash 6-3, 7-6(4) last season in the Miami fourth round. They have split their four hard-court matches at two wins apiece.

Both players remain in stellar form in 2012. Isner stunned Roger Federer last month in a Davis Cup rubber and his record for the year stands at 9-3 after straight-set victories this week over Jesse Levine, Ryan Sweeting, and Bernard Tomic. The top seed is up to a career-high ranking of No. 11 in the world.

Anderson, who registers at 36th in the rankings is a respectable 8-4 for the year. The 6'8'' South African dealt with some knee issues at the beginning of his 2012 campaign, but he reached the San Jose quarterfinals two weeks ago and so far in Delray Beach he has taken out Austin Krajicek, Xavier Malisse, and Andy Roddick.

While Isner absolutely destroyed Tomic, Anderson is coming off three-set wins over Malisse and Roddick. The No. 7 seed even had to save three match points in the second set against Roddick. Isner will be well-rested, but Anderson still has a considerable edge in movement and groundstrokes. Unless Isner enjoys a lethal serving day, look for Anderson to prevail in three tight sets.

The winner will be a considerable favorite to capture the title on Sunday against either Dudi Sela or Marinko Matosevic.
