  • Isner, Tomic square off in Delray Beach quarterfinals

    3/2/12 3:17 AM | Ricky Dimon
Isner, Tomic square off in Delray Beach quarterfinals A blockbuster quarterfinal is on tap for Friday in Delray Beach, as John Isner and Bernard Tomic are set to square off. Andy Roddick and Kevin Anderson are also in action.

    (1) John Isner vs. (8) Bernard Tomic

A showdown worthy of a title match rather than a quarterfinal will be offered at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships when Isner and Tomic take the court on Friday. Isner's 2012 campaign has been highlighted by a Davis Cup win over Roger Federer. The top-seeded American is now trying to bounce back from a quarterfinal loss in Memphis to Jurgen Melzer, and so far this week he has taken out both Jesse Levine and Ryan Sweeting in straight sets.

Tomic is a stellar 9-3 for the season following straight-set victories over Tommy Haas and Tim Smyczek. The 19-year-old Australian already has one semifinal on his resume this year, having advanced to the last four in Brisbane. This will be a classic matchup of Isner's serve and power versus Tomic's change of pace. If Isner serves well, look for him to survive in three sets.

    (7) Kevin Anderson vs. (4) Andy Roddick

Anderson and Roddick will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers when they do battle on Friday in Delray Beach. They faced each other on three occasions last year, with Roddick taking two of the three encounters. After Roddick prevailed in Brisbane and at Queen's Club, Anderson got revenge with a 6-4, 7-5 victory in Beijing.

Roddick may be turning the corner in what has been a tough 2012 campaign. After a host of injury-plagued, early-round losses, the 29-year-old American has victories this week over Philipp Petzschner and Denis Istomin. Anderson, ranked six spots behind his opponent at No. 36 in the world, is a decent 7-4 for the season having dismissed Austin Krajicek and Xavier Malisse. Look for a big-serving affair to go Anderson's way in three sets.
