  • Roddick gets another shot at Istomin

    3/1/12 5:15 AM | Ricky Dimon
Roddick gets another shot at Istomin It will be the second meeting in the last three weeks for Andy Roddick and Denis Istomin when they clash in Delray Beach on Thursday. A place in the quarterfinals is at stake.

Andy Roddick and Denis Istomin will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers and for the second time in the last three weeks when they battle for a quarterfinal spot at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Thursday. Their only previous encounter came in San Jose, where Istomin rolled 6-2, 6-4.

Roddick was dealing with an ankle injury in that contest and his whole 2012 campaign has been plagued by physical problems. The 29-year-old American suffered a first-round loss last week in Memphis to a slumping Xavier Malisse. Roddick did not look entirely 100 percent early against Philipp Petzschner on Tuesday, but he recovered to score a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Istomin is playing stellar tennis this season. The 51st-ranked Uzbek followed up his win over Roddick by reaching the final in San Jose. He could not make a quick turnaround in Memphis and lost to eventual champion Jurgen Melzer in a third-set tiebreaker, but he appears to be back on track in Delray Beach. Istomin eased past Matthew Ebden 6-2, 6-3 on Monday to improve his 2010 record to 10-5.

Once again, the outcome of this one should be determined by Roddick's physical state. Istomin is in fine form, but Roddick's performance in the last two sets against Petzschner was encouraging. Look for the No. 4 seed to avenge his recent loss to Istomin in three sets.
