    Ferrer closing in on Acapulco semifinal Two-time defending champion David Ferrer is set to headline quarterfinal action at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel on Thursday. The world No. 6 will take on fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar for a spot in the semifinals.

    Top seed David Ferrer leads compatriot Pablo Andujar 1-0 in the head-to-head series. Thursday marks their first encounter since 2008.

    Ferrer earned a round of 16 victory over Lukasz Kubot, 6-3, 6-3. The 29-year-old is bidding for his third semifinal berth of the season.

    Andujar rallied to upend 5th seed Florian Mayer in the second round, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. The 26-year-old will attempt to make his first tour-level semi since fall 2011.

    Prediction: Ferrer in straight sets.
