Nishikori, Verdasco bid for Acapulco quarterfinals Tournament seeds Kei Nishikori and Fernando Verdasco will be in second-round action at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel on Wednesday. The players are set to face off against respective opponents Jeremy Chardy and Juan Ignacio Chela.

    (4) Kei Nishikori vs. Jeremy Chardy

Fourth seed Kei Nishikori leads Jeremy Chardy 1-0 in the series, having won their only previous meeting at the 2011 Masters 1000 Miami. Wednesday marks their first meeting on clay.

Nishikori began the week with an abbreviate match against veteran Albert Montanes. The 22-year-old had built a 6-2, 4-1 edge when the Spaniard retired. Nishikori is bidding for his 10th victory of the season.

Chardy defeated Portgual’s Rui Machado in the opening round, 7-6(4), 6-3. The Frenchman looks to make his second tour-level quarterfinal this year.

    (8) Fernando Verdasco vs. Juan Ignacio Chela

Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco holds a slender 4-3 series lead against Juan Ignacio Chela. The two are set to meet for the first time since 2008.

Verdasco breezed through the first round with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Filippo Volandri. The Spaniard remains on track to reach his third quarterfinal in 2012.

Chela dismissed Mexican wildcard Cesar Ramirez in the first round, 6-0, 6-2. The Argentine veteran will attempt to book his second clay-court quarterfinal this season.

What happened to Kei?

Watching the Giraldo/Berlocq match right now, quite an entertaining match. This Giraldo, what a guy, the way he saved and won that point, after a smash at the net by Berlocq, what a save! And the way he picked up that drop shot from Berlocq at set point and won the set!
