• Raonic, Melzer collide in Memphis title match

    2/26/12 3:28 AM | Ricky Dimon
Raonic, Melzer collide in Memphis title match Milos Raonic will take part in his second consecutive Memphis final on Sunday. He looks to go one step further than last year as he faces Jurgen Melzer.

Milos Raonic will be making a repeat appearance in the final of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships when he takes the court against Jurgen Melzer on Sunday afternoon. Raonic lost a 7-6(7), 6-7(11), 7-5 thriller to Andy Roddick in last year's title match.

The 35th-ranked Canadian entered this Memphis event just as he did in 2011, fresh off a title in San Jose. He has maintained his fine form with straight-set victories over Ernests Gulbis, Sergiy Stakhovsky, Olivier Rochus, and Benjamin Becker. Raonic is an incredible 15-1 for the season and he has dropped serve only once this week (to Rochus).

Melzer's Memphis hot streak comes as a much bigger surprise. The 30-year-old Austrian had won just two matches in ATP events prior to this, but he is now putting on a display of clutch tennis. Melzer outlasted both Denis Istomin and Ivan Dodig in third-set tiebreakers, upset John Isner in straight sets, then took out Radek Stepanek 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 on Saturday.

This is the first-ever meeting between the two players, so Melzer will be seeing the 21-year-old's booming serve for the first time. Based on his current form, Raonic should take the title in two competitive sets.
