  • Isner takes on Young in all-American showdown

    2/23/12 6:18 AM | Ricky Dimon
Isner takes on Young in all-American showdown Top-seeded John Isner will continue his Memphis campaign on Thursday. Standing in his way of the quarterfinals is fellow American Donald Young.

John Isner and Donald Young will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers at the ATP level and for the third time overall when they clash in round two of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships on Thursday night.

Their first meeting came at the Legg Mason Classic in 2008, when Isner prevailed 6-4, 7-6(4). They also faced each other in the final of the 2009 Tallahassee Challenger, with Isner emerging triumphant 7-5, 6-4.

Based on his current form, the 6'9'' American remains a huge favorite to get the best of Young once again. He is up to a career-high ranking of No. 13 in the world after upsetting Roger Federer earlier this month in a United States' Davis Cup victory. Isner, the top seed and a former runner-up in Memphis, ousted Gilles Muller 7-6(1), 7-6(4) on Tuesday while firing 26 aces in the process.

Young also won a pair of tiebreakers to advance through his Memphis opener on Monday. The 41st-ranked American survived Grigor Dimitrov 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6). It was a confidence-building victory for Young, who had been just 1-3 for the season prior to this week and coming off a first-round San Jose loss to Michael Russell.

The pressure will be on Young to hold serve basically every single time he toes the line, because Isner looks almost impossible to break right now. If Young shows mental toughness and puts in a high percentage of first serves, this could be competitive.

Regardless, even a decent serving day by Isner should pave the way to a straight-set win.
