  • Tomic, Dimitrov highlighted on day one in Memphis

    2/20/12 4:07 AM | Ricky Dimon
Tomic, Dimitrov highlighted on day one in Memphis Rising stars Bernard Tomic and Grigor Dimitrov will be in action on Monday at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. They are going up against Ivan Dodig and Donald Young, respectively.

Ivan Dodig vs. (8) Bernard Tomic

Tomic will kick off his American hard-court swing when he takes the court at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships on Monday afternoon. The 19-year-old Aussie is a stellar 7-2 this season; his only two loses have come to Andy Murray in the Brisbane semifinals and to Roger Federer in the Australian Open fourth round.

Up first for Tomic is Dodig, whom he has never faced. The Croat showed flashes of brilliance last year, but he is just 3-6 for his 2012 campaign and down at No. 58 in the world after peaking at a career-high of 32nd. Although Dodig is at his best on hard courts, a huge edge in current form goes to Tomic. Look for the No. 8 seed to advance in straight sets.

    Grigor Dimitrov vs. Donald Young

Dimitrov and Young will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers at the ATP level and third time overall when they clash on Monday in Memphis. Young took a 2010 Challenger meeting 6-4, 7-6(2) before Dimitrov won a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(2) thriller in Winston-Salem last summer.

There is a big rankings discrepancy in this one simply because Young (world No. 41) caught fire during the 2011 U.S. Open Series. Dimitrov (world No. 83) has simply been consistently mediocre. At the moment, that's also exactly what Young is. The 22-year-old American is just 1-3 for the season after a first-round San Jose loss to Michael Russell. Expect a close one, with Dimitrov prevailing in three sets.
