  • Federer, Del Potro collide in Rotterdam title match

    2/19/12 1:15 AM | Kelli DeMario
Federer, Del Potro collide in Rotterdam title match Top seed Roger Federer will be looking to capture his 71st ATP World Tour title, as he faces third seed Juan Martin Del Potro in Rotterdam. The players are set to contest their career meeting Sunday afternoon.

World No. 3 Roger Federer leads World No. 10 Juan Martin Del Potro 8-2 in the series, having won five of 7 hard-court matches. The two last met at the 2012 Australian Open, where the veteran recorded a quarterfinal victory in straight sets.

Federer rallied from a 4-6, 1-2 deficit during his semifinal clash with former world No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko. The Swiss fought to close the match in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach his 101st ATP World Tour final.

Federer is bidding for his first championship crown since late 2011, when won the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. He remains on course to take home a second ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament trophy on Sunday.

Del Potro extended his Rotterdam debut with a convincing 6-3, 6-1, semifinal success against 2nd seed Tomas Berdych. The Argentine will be making his 14th appearance in an ATP World Tour final.

He looks to snag his first championship title since spring 2011, when he put together a title-winning run in Estoril.

    Prediction: Federer in three sets.

Delpo in 2.

Emiliano55 , 2/19/12 1:32 AM

Delpo in 3?

luckystar , 2/19/12 9:08 AM

I'm not so sure Delpo will win, Berdy didn't look too well yesterday.

nadline , 2/19/12 9:38 AM

Fed in 2!!

mani4Tennis , 2/19/12 10:02 AM

70/30, Federer.

If Federer wins the first set he will win in 2, otherwise, he'll win in 3.

nadline , 2/19/12 12:36 PM

fed in 2 gruelling sets

fedexpress , 2/19/12 12:40 PM

Fed for the win..in 2 or 3 dont know

sanju , 2/19/12 2:06 PM

Fed looking in ominous form..great footwork..may take it in 2

sanju , 2/19/12 2:29 PM

for all the great form DElpo is in, it means nothing today in front of Fed..Fed outfoxing him big time ..

Even Davy and Mimme(watever his name is) offered more challenge

sanju , 2/19/12 2:36 PM

a tennis lesson by Roger so far.

OnTheRise , 2/19/12 2:37 PM

Ha...Delpo looks like he has two left hands...
Fed in total control here.

zare , 2/19/12 2:37 PM

Delpo movement is letting him down yesterday it was davy's extraordinary court coverage that was giving problems to fed

mani4Tennis , 2/19/12 2:47 PM

It's a no contest just as I thought.

nadline , 2/19/12 2:48 PM

you know nadline, that's how things seems like when Roger takes control it's been this way for most wins of his career so live with it and don't start complaining. it's Perfect for Roger and many tennis fans and for some people it's boring. well, that's their problem.

OnTheRise , 2/19/12 3:19 PM

Delpo is lumbering on the tennis court while Fed is skipping around, that's the difference here. Notice Delpo's wins over Fed, Rafa and Murray all happened during 2009, his best year. Since then, he hasn't beaten any of the top four. The top four are alot quicker than Delpo, unless Delpo is on fire, hitting his big serves and big forehands without any misses, it's very difficult for him to beat them.

luckystar , 2/19/12 3:24 PM

agree Delpos footwork is the main issue..footwork n speed

You gotta hand it to Fed..even at 30 plus..hes really quick on the court..its admirable

sanju , 2/19/12 3:27 PM

Delpo had 5 bp chances, couldnt convert even 1

and today I think hes hardly making UEs too..both his forehand and backhand are working

sanju , 2/19/12 3:29 PM

whereas in contrast Delpo making UE by the dozen

sanju , 2/19/12 3:30 PM

Who said I was complaining? I was just stating a fact; so Delpo has beaten Federer twice and Nadal 3 times but I see those as blips, I think they are more likely to beat him than the other way round.

nadline , 2/19/12 3:33 PM

^^^^Response @OnTheRise , 2/19/12 3:19 PM

nadline , 2/19/12 3:36 PM

^^^^ okay, got that.

OnTheRise , 2/19/12 3:39 PM

Rogerdam I guess...

30love , 2/19/12 3:40 PM

Full range of shots on display from Federer.Brilliant cross court volley to save a break point in the second set.Very good touch on his drop shots.

stratocast51 , 2/19/12 3:48 PM

Really keen to see the winner of Dubai now with Djoko, Murray and Roger all playing

It depends on whose side of draw Murray falls in, that person will be at a disadvantage

sanju , 2/19/12 3:50 PM

Can you beat the man's arrogance? Federer KNOWS he'll be at the WTF. Lol

nadline , 2/19/12 3:52 PM

Good in deed. Great to see the FED win another. C'Mon! :)

sky , 2/19/12 3:53 PM

Congrats Fedfans.

sky , 2/19/12 3:54 PM

nadline - knows hell be at WTF? Didnt get u?

sanju , 2/19/12 3:57 PM

Novak, Murray, Fed all 3 have won at a title in 2012..Cmon Rafa get urs fast too

sanju , 2/19/12 3:59 PM

He also knows delpo will be at WTF so it shows common sense.

mani4Tennis , 2/19/12 3:59 PM

@ nadline, 2/19/12 3:52 PM

the WTF it is then, why not. so what you think of the seven years part huh?

OnTheRise , 2/19/12 4:01 PM

but well its a lock that the Top 4 will be in WTF..I dont think theres any surprise in that unless anyone gets injured and out of action

sanju , 2/19/12 4:04 PM

Congrats Roger.

What a match. Nothing beats watching the GOAT playing at this level.

HOPP Roger!!!

bleck , 2/19/12 4:16 PM

^^^^Roger should pick on someone his size.

nadline , 2/19/12 5:36 PM

GOAT, ahaha. Very funny bleck, you're a funny guy/girl. But celebrate, you won't for a long time once Nole, Rafa and Andy come back.

nemanja230690 , 2/19/12 7:43 PM

nemanja230690 , 2/19/12 7:43 PM

llike they have never played before and making their debut and please don't include murray in discussion until he wins his FIRST GS.

KMA , 2/19/12 9:53 PM

Sanju,
playing a Grand Slam final is worth more than ten Rotterdam titles ;)

danica , 2/19/12 11:10 PM

^^or 10 Barcelona titles or 5 MC titles??

KMA , 2/20/12 12:50 AM

and as murray has won brisbane(?) -ATP 250 and as per danica a GS final equals to 20 kind of that title..isn't it??

KMA , 2/20/12 12:55 AM

^^or 10 Barcelona titles or 5 MC titles??
KMA , 2/20/12 12:50 AM

And your point is??? The only player with multiple clay titles is the King of Clay who has also made 7 out of the last 8 slam finals, winning 4 of them. Someone who is supposed to be a 'goat' has made 2 slam finals out of the last 8 and only won 1 of them.

nadline , 2/20/12 9:17 AM

If Muzz wins Dubai, he'll be closing in on the #3 ranking, so Fed should concentrate on holding onto #3 rather than aspiring to #1.

nadline

And here we go again...

The not supposedly but surely, without a doubt, GOAT made 18 of 19 slam finals (streak of 10 until AO 2008 and a streak of 8 after) winning 12 of them.

If when nadal is 29/30 years old, and he's still playing tennis and not golf or skiing, he makes "2 slam finals out of the last 8 and only won 1 of them", the nadal fans should be thankful for that.

HOPP Roger. Always the gentleman, great speach towards del potro who is a very nice guy.

Dubai next in line.

bleck , 2/20/12 10:11 AM

nadline..your data is wrong ..Roger has made only 1 slam final out of last 8 (which is RG 2011) and has been slamless snce past 8 slams..he hasnt won any .. he was taken out in the semis in 4 out of the 8, in the qtrs in 3 of them.

Not making any comment on Roger as I think at 30, if he can make semis, its worthy of appreciation, I just wanted to correct the data.

sanju , 2/20/12 10:48 AM

Thanks sanju. I forgot to include this year's AO and counted the 2010 AO that he won.

bleck, it's easy to be gracious in victory. We all know how ungracious Roger is in defeat.
