  • Roddick, Raonic make 2012 San Jose debuts

    2/15/12 8:41 PM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick, Raonic make 2012 San Jose debuts With injury talk about both players swirling, Andy Roddick and Milos Raonic will take the court at the SAP Open.

Andy Roddick (2) vs. Denis Kudla

American Andy Roddick was forced to withdraw from his second-round match against Lleyton Hewitt at the Australian Open. The American is attempting to play in San Jose, but whether the injury of a few weeks ago is completely healed remains to be seen. Roddick will take on a countryman 10 years his junior in Denis Kudla.

Kudla is a promising 19-year-old. The American is ranked 203rd in the world and already has a win over compatriot Jack Sock, who got a wildcard into the San Jose tournament.

The outcome of this match will come down to Roddick’s fitness. The veteran American seemed to be in good form in Melbourne before the injury. He was serving and hitting well off the baseline. A healthy Roddick should advance relatively comfortably. If the 29-year old is still suffering from the thigh problem, Kudla could well find himself in the quarters.

Milos Raonic (3) vs. Tobias Kamke

Canada’s top player, Milos Raonic, has been struggling with an unknown knee problem that he sustained during Davis Cup play last weekend. As of right now, Raonic is still in the lineup with Tobias Kamke of Germany.

Raonic has beaten Kamke in the past year, with their only other match coming in Halle, which Raonic won in straight sets. The Canadian, with his massive first serve, is tough to beat on hard court but the knee injury could mean a short tournament for the SAP Open defending champion.
