• Ginepri, Young in San Jose evening session

    2/14/12 9:15 PM | Cheryl Murray
Ginepri, Young in San Jose evening session Veteran Robby Ginepri, who received a wildcard into San Jose, will take on the big-hitting Belgian Xavier Malisse as first round action heats up at the SAP Open.

Robby Ginepri (WC) vs. Xavier Malisse

American Robby Ginepri has fallen on hard times. The one-time world No. 15 has dropped to a No. 235 ranking and has been relegated mainly to Challenger events. The American reached the final of a Challenger event in Honolulu, but he didn’t make it out of the first round of qualifying at the Australian Open.

Xavier Malisse has a much higher doubles ranking than singles these days, with the Belgian sitting at No. 74 in singles but 29th in doubles. The Belgian has not yet won a match in 2012, with three first-round losses in three tournaments.

Despite the ranking disparity, Ginepri actually has a shot at the upset. He’ll be playing at home against an out-of-form Malisse. Still, with Ginepri not match tough, the Belgian should still walk away with the win.

Donald Young (7) vs. Michael Russell

Perennial tour veteran Michael Russell, ranked 104th in the world, will take on fellow American Donald Young in Tuesday’s feature match. After years of waiting, Young finally had his breakout year in 2011, with a semifinal showing in Washington, a round of 16 berth at the US Open and an appearance in the final of Bangkok.

Young hasn’t played as well at the start of the 2012 season, with a first and second-round loss in Auckland and the Australian Open, respectively, to show for his efforts.

Prediction – Young in straight sets.
