  • Ferrero, Nalbandian in action at Brasil Open

    2/14/12 11:26 PM | Ricky Dimon
Ferrero, Nalbandian in action at Brasil Open Juan Carlos Ferrero and David Nalbandian will contest their openers in Sao Paulo on Wednesday. Both players are coming off strong Davis Cup performances.

    (6) Juan Carlos Ferrero vs. Leondardo Mayer

Ferrero heads into the Brasil Open with some much-needed momentum after picking up his first win of the season last week in Davis Cup play. After falling short in opening-round matches at the Heineken Open and Australian Open, the 32-year-old Spaniard beat Mikhail Kukushkin in five sets as defending champion Spain knocked off Kazakhstan.

Up first for Ferrero on Wednesday in Sao Paolo is Mayer, whom he has never faced. The Argentine registers 37 spots behind his opponent at No. 80 in the world. Mayer owns a 1-3 record for the season, having defeated Santiago Giraldo two weeks ago in Vina del Mar before losing to Jeremy Chardy. This will be no walk in the park for Ferrero, but look for the No. 6 seed to prevail in two tight sets.

    David Nalbandian vs. Benoit Paire

Nalbandian and Paire will also be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they take the court on Wednesday night. Paire, who comes in 14 spots off his career-high ranking at No. 98 in the world, has already won three ATP-level matches this season having won only six previously in his entire career. The Frenchman has not played since a first-round loss to Stanislas Wawrinka in Melbourne.

Like Ferrero, Nalbandian is also hoping to build on a stellar Davis Cup performance. The 84th-ranked Argentine opened with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, 7-6(5) victory over Florian Mayer as the visitors went on to take down Germany. Nalbandian is 2-1 so far in 2012, the lone blemish coming in controversial five-set fashion against John Isner at the Australian Open. This is not Nalbandian's favorite surface, but count on him advancing in straight sets.
