Ivan Ljubicic and countryman Ivan Dodig will take the court on Wednesday night in Zagreb for the hometown crowd.
Ivan Ljubicic (1) vs. Michael Berrer
This will be the first ever meeting between Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia and Germany’s Michael Berrer. Ljubicic, ranked 32 in the world, is the tournament’s top seed, but he had a tough opener against Karol Beck, which went 3 sets after the Slovakian captured the middle frame. Ljubicic will certainly have the support of the crowd on hand and Berrer has not been in good form, with his ranking dropping to No. 105 in the world.
Prediction – Ljubicic in straight sets.
Ivan Dodig (4) vs. Marsel Ilhan
Fellow Croat Ivan Dodig, who made headlines in 2011 with a defeat of world No. 2 Rafael Nadal, will take on Marsel Ilhan as the first round wraps up in Zagreb. This will be their first meeting.
Dodig sits at a healthy No. 38 in the world, while Ilhan, from Turkey is ranked 114 in the world. Ilhan has had little success in 2012 so far. The Turk failed to qualify for Doha and the Australian Open and he only won a single match at the Helibronn Challenger event. Dodig fared slightly better, but still only managed one win on the main tour for the season, a first round match in Chennai.
Prediction – Dodig in 3.
