Mikhail Youzhny and headline-stealing Marcos Baghdatis will be in action in Zagreb as the first round wraps up.
Mikhail Youzhny (3) vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky
Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny comes into Zagreb off a completely dismal showing at the Australian Open. The Russian, whose ranking sits at No. 39 in the world, lost in the first round at the hands of Andrey Golubev in five tough sets.
Youzhny is familiar with opponent Sergiy Stakhovsky from the Ukraine, ranked 67th in the world. The two men have met three other times, with the Russian just edging the head-to-head series 2-1. Youzhny won their last encounter last year in St. Petersburg.
Prediction – Youzhny isn’t playing all that well, but he should be motivated to get a few more wins as the season gets underway. The Russian in 3.
Marcos Baghdatis (6) vs. Lukas Rosol
Marcos Baghdatis was one of the big headliners out of the Australian Open last week. Unfortunately for the Cypriot, it wasn’t winning that made headlines. In a pique, Baghdatis snapped four rackets on a change-over in his second round match against Stanislas Wawrinka, two of which were still in plastic from the stringer. Baghdatis lost in four sets.
The Cypriot will be looking to pick up the pieces starting in Zagreb. Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic is ranked 81st in the world. He’s won just one match this year in three tournaments over Albert Ramos in Auckland. He lost in the first round in Doha and at the Australian Open. He and Baghdatis have never played before.
Prediction – Baghdatis in straight sets.
