  • Murray meets Nishikori in quarterfinal

    1/24/12 8:06 PM | Kelli DeMario
Murray meets Nishikori in quarterfinal World No. 4 Andy Murray will face 24th seed Kei Nishikori for a place in the Australian Open semifinals. The winner moves on to meet either defending champion Novak Djokovic or 5th seed David Ferrer in the next round.

Fourth seed Andy Murray leads 24th seed Kei Nishikori 1-0 in the series, having won their only previous meeting at the 2011 Masters 1000 Shanghai. The Scot recorded a routine victory in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-0.

Murray passed into the last eight after opponent Mikhail Kukushkin retired with heat-related illness. The 24-year-old had built a commanding 6-1, 6-1, 1-0 advantage when play ended.

He is bidding for his third consecutive semifinal berth at the tournament.

Nishikori earned a spot in the quarterfinals following his five-set ousting of former finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. After rallying from a set deficit, the 22-year-old went on to close the match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

He remains on course to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal.

    Prediction: Murray in four sets.

Tsk, tsk Kelli, did u really think Kei would get a set against our Andy?...
P*** awful serving though, won't do against Nole/David. Perhaps he's doing that thing they do in poker, fake your hand so your opponents think you've got worse cards than u really have and get over cocky?
Oh dearie me, talking about gambling again. What can u all be thinking..;)

Didnt see the match, but glad Andy won swiftly
Up to Djokovic to keep his end of the bargain

^^^It wasn't that swift as the score says. A lot of the games went to deuce, funnily enough, Andy seemed like he would definitely win in the end but Kei held his ground even though he is evidently knackered. I didn't watch the 3rd set so I don't know how easily Andy won it.

What's with Andy's serve? Sometimes he serves lights out and sometimes he is dismal.

and there was me beginning to think he was finally sorting his serve out :( That said, nole fans should be just as concerned by the number of times nole got broken by hewitt.

alex , 1/25/12 8:53 AM

alex, agree :) Only Fed seems to be serving well.

Easy day at the office for Murray today. I'm sure Kei will put up a better fight had he not being so knackered, still Murray will win in the end. After watching Nole today, I feel that though he's moving and playing well, there were times where Ferrer had chances to hit winners when Nole was out of position but Ferrer simply didn't have the killer shot to finish the point. I was thinking then that if it's one of Rafa, Fed of Murray, they would have won the point already.

Murray plays better that Ferrer and he's as quick as Ferrer. I'm sure he can hang with Nole like Ferrer did today but has bigger weapons than Ferrer to deal with Nole. If the right Murray turns up to play, then I think we may be in for a long day.
