No. 3 seed Roger Federer will take on the big Croat Ivo Karlovic as he looks to move into the fourth round.
Switzerland’s Roger Federer has a 9-1 record over third-round opponent Ivo Karlovic, but only one of those matches came easily. Federer has traditionally been immune to big servers, but Karlovic’s serve is such a weapon that even Federer sometimes has problems returning it.
Karlovic dropped a set to Carlos Berlocq in the second round, suggesting that the big man might not be serving his best in this tournament, though he still sits at No. 2 for the most aces in the tournament so far (44).
But even if Karlovic serves well, he isn’t likely to get more than a set from Federer. The Swiss is significantly better in all other aspects of the game and Karlovic’s return of serve is often severely lacking.
Prediction – Federer for the win in four.

what time is this match
tennis2011 , 1/19/12 8:29 PM
easy day in office for Fed... Karlovic simply does not have weapons...
zare , 1/19/12 8:45 PM
Rafa is first on Laver at 11 am local time followed by Federer.
nadline , 1/19/12 9:23 PM
Allez Federer.
I always support anyone against the giants.

It's hard to get into a match when half of the points are exactly one stoke.
cherylmurray , 1/20/12 3:44 AM
The maximum height for tennis should be 6"5', because the likes of Isner and Karlovic have an unfair advantage and they are not enjoyable to watch.
Ricky will be on my case now.
nadline , 1/20/12 4:13 AM
That was quite a tense set point that Karlovic had. It might not be the most exciting to watch, but that was a nailbiting first set...
Bharata , 1/20/12 4:31 AM
Yes good one there by Fed! One set point down yet manages to win the set in the end, well done Fed! Didn't panic when one set point down, happy for Fed. Hopes he wins this. I want to see a Fed vs Delpo QF, so please both of you do a good job and beat your opponents today.
luckystar , 1/20/12 4:34 AM
To win the whole thing, Fed would have to beat Del Potro, Nadal, and probably Djokovic in order. So I'll be happy if he survives Karlovic...
Bharata , 1/20/12 4:56 AM
And that's probably the match... Federer breaks in the third. Just serve it out from here on Roger.
Bonker , 1/20/12 5:39 AM
Quite a boring match. I hope Fed quickly finishes the match. I want to watch some other live matches.
luckystar , 1/20/12 5:54 AM
so people, how did Fed play? How is his form looking? I am sure the match was hell boring as it must be a serving contest
sanju , 1/20/12 7:35 AM
Yes very boring, nothing much to say. Can't tell how's Fed's form from this match. He played his usual way against Ivo, and as foreseen, there's at least a tie break set.
luckystar , 1/20/12 7:55 AM
Very boring indeed! Karlovic can do serious damage with his serve and a little bit of damage with his forehand and volleys. Movement and backhand are seriously below par... Next up for Federer is Tomic or Dolgopolov. Totally different match :-)
Bonker , 1/20/12 9:08 AM
Through in straights, that's what matters at the end of the day.
Tomic's and dolgopolov's variety, slices and akward play may trouble a few players but not Roger for sure.
bleck , 1/20/12 9:47 AM
Agree with bleck. Fed is too experienced for both guys, unless the shanking Fed shows up. Still he'll only lose a set at worst.

Karlovic will hope to take a set or two in a tiebreaker. This will be nailbiting stuff. Hopefully Fed doesn't lose focus while thinking ahead. To break Karlovic you have to hope you see at least 2 or 3 second serves...
Surface is pretty slow though.
