Tournament seeds Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon are slated to play their opening-round matches at the Australian Open. The players will be in action against respective opponents Denis Istomin and Danai Udomchoke.
(6) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Denis Istomin
World No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga leads Denis Istomin 2-0 in the head-to-head series. The two last clashed during the 2011 grass-court season, where the Frenchman scored a straight-set win at Eastbourne.
Tsonga is 4-0 in 2012, following his title-winning success in Doha. The 26-year-old advanced to the 2008 Australian Open final, where he fell to Novak Djokovic in four sets.
Istomin, ranked world No. 60, is 4-2 for the year. The 25-year-old is bidding for his first win at the Australian Open in two years.
Prediction: Tsonga in straight sets.
(12) Gilles Simon vs. (Q) Danai Udomchoke
World No. 14 Gilles Simon is 3-1 for 2012 after making the final four in Brisbane. The 27-year-old recorded a trio of three-set wins before losing to Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-4. Simon will be making his sixth appearance at the Australian Open.
Udomchoke enters into the Australian Open ranked world No. 201. The veteran looks to win his first match at the tournament since 2007.
Prediction: Simon in straight sets.

Istomin is the poor man's version of Tsonga so Tsonga will prevail.

Udomchoke is from Thailand, isn't he? I've heard about his name but no idea how he plays. Didn't get to watch his match, no Tsonga here too. Watching Hewitt vs Stebe. This left handed Stebe guy is playing some good tennis, the match is so close that points won by both players is so close. Some of Stebe's passing shots are Nadal like. He also has a good DTL forehand and DTL backhand. Hewitt really has his hands full!

It's The Battle of The Oranges most players are wearing some version of orange. I'll have to get my sunglasses out.

Goodness, someone I've never heard of is giving darling Gilles all sorts of problems! Plays like a mirror image of him too. If it goes on like this they're going to be on court for hours and hours.
ed: wherever u r hope u r OK. Don't forget we've got doubles to practise...;)
Pleasantly quiet and conversational on TT too.....
