  • Raonic, Roddick, Ferrer in Day 2 action at Australian Open

    1/16/12 7:02 PM | Cheryl Murray
Raonic, Roddick, Ferrer in Day 2 action at Australian Open Newcomer Milos Raonic, veteran Andy Roddick and world No. 5 David Ferrer will take the court in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Andy Roddick (15) vs. Robin Haase

Dutchman Robin Haase and Andy Roddick will meet at the Australian Open for the second straight year. Last year, they met in the third round, which Roddick won in four sets. Haase, ranked 53rd in the world, didn’t have a particularly promising start to the season. The Dutchman lost in the first round in Sydney to Alex Bogomolov.

Haase can be a tricky opponent because of his monster first serve, but Roddick's serve is probably even better. The underdog might take a set, but Roddick should advance.

Milos Raonic (23) vs. Filippo Volandri

Canadian Milos Raonic had his first ATP breakthrough a year ago in Melbourne. He came through qualifying to advance to the round of 16. He sits at a career-high 25th in the world and he nabbed a title already this year in Chennai.

He will take on Italian veteran Filippo Volandri, ranked 72nd in the world. Volandri's preparation cannot have been encouraging. The Italian played 2 tournaments and lost in the first round of both. Volandri is a confirmed clay-courter who racks up most of his ranking points on the dirt.

Prediction – Raonic has already proven that the courts in Melbourne suit his game. He should have no trouble getting past Volandri.

David Ferrer (5) vs. Rui Machado

World No. 5 David Ferrer is playing some of the best tennis of his career. The Spaniard made the final at the exhibition in Abu Dhabi and he snagged the title last week in Auckland. He will take on Rui Machado of Portugal, who comes into Melbourne off a pair of first-round losses in Doha and Auckland. Machado is ranked 70th in the world.

Ferrer has been remarkably consistent of late. He made his way into the semifinals of the World Tour Finals, beating Rafael Nadal along the way, and he had a big five-set win over Juan Martin Del Potro in the Davis Cup final. The Spaniard should breeze his way through this match.
