David Ferrer will be back in action at the Heineken Open against Alejandro Falla on Thursday. Nicolas Almagro and Philipp Kohlschreiber are also looking for a place in the semifinals.
(1) David Ferrer vs. Alejandro Falla
Ferrer will be featured during the night session as he headlines quarterfinal play at the Heineken Open on Thursday. The top-seeded Spaniard reached the World Tour Finals last fall and helped his country win the Davis Cup. It was full steam ahead for Ferrer on Wednesday, as he thrashed Lukas Rosol following a first-round bye.
Up next for the defending champion is a first-ever meeting with Falla, who is in the midst of a stellar week. The veteran Colombian took out No. 8 seed Donald Young in round one before rolling over Potito Starace 7-6(3), 6-3. Falla should be able to make this a relatively entertaining baseline battle, but count on Ferrer advancing in straight sets.
(8) Philipp Kohlschreiber vs. (2) Nicolas Almagro
Kohlschreiber and Almagro will be squaring off for the sixth time in their careers at the ATP level when they clash on Thursday in Auckland. Almagro leads the head-to-head series 3-2, having most recently prevailed 6-3, 7-5 last summer on the clay courts of Hamburg. The two competitors have split their two previous hard-court encounters.
Almagro, a semifinalist last week in Chennai, got a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed then hammered Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 6-2 in his tournament opener. Kohlschreiber began his 2011 campaign in Doha, where he was dealt a raw hand and lost immediately to Rafael Nadal in three sets. The German already has a pair of three-set victories this week at the expense of Stephane Bohli and Ryan Harrison. This could go either way, but Almagro in three sets is the pick.
