It will be an all-American affair when Ryan Harrison and Sam Querrey square off in the Auckland first round on Tuesday. Both players entered the tournament as wild cards.
Ryan Harrison and Sam Querrey will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they clash in round one of the Heineken Open on Tuesday.
Querrey has far more experience and has enjoyed a more illustrious career, but it is the younger Harrison who goes in as the higher-ranked player. The 19-year-old American broke onto the ATP scene in 2011 and surged to a career-high ranking of No. 66 in the world (he now sits at 84th). Harrison lost his season-opener last week to Marcos Baghdatis in Brisbane.
The simple reason why Querrey registers 10 spots behind his opponent at 94th in the world is injury. After Queen's Club last June, Querrey played only one more main-draw ATP event (a quarterfinal showing in Valencia). The 6'6'' American looked rusty in a first-round loss to Victor Hanescu last week in Chennai.
When healthy, Querrey is a clear favorite in this matchup. However, Harrison still has momentum on his side despite wearing out down the stretch in 2011. Look for Harrison's match-toughness to pave the way to a three-set victory.
