Viktor Troicki begins his 2012 campaign against Lukas Rosol on Monday in Doha. Troicki is joined on the first day of main-draw action by Dmitry Tursunov and Albert Ramos.
Lukas Rosol vs. (5) Viktor Troicki
Troicki will look to sustain momentum from a stellar 2011 season when he takes the court for round one of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open on Monday evening. The fifth-seeded Serb compiled a 40-26 record last year and he currently registers at No. 22 in the world. Troicki cooled off slightly after a blistering start, but he should be rejuvenated following the offseason.
Up first for Troicki is Rosol, whom the favorite has never faced. Rosol just enjoyed a breakout campaign at 26 years old by earning six of his seven career ATP match victories. The Czech is up to No. 70 in the world, way ahead of the cutoff mark for Grand Slams. Troicki will have to take this match seriously, but he should advance in straight sets.
Albert Ramos vs. Dmitry Tursunov
Ramos and Tursunov will be squaring off for the second time in their careers and second time in the last three months when they do battle in the Doha first round on Monday. They met last fall in the Moscow opening round, with Tursunov prevailing 7-6(5), 6-4.
A healthy Tursunov compiled a decent 20-17 record at the ATP level in 2011 and he is back up to No. 40 in the world. Ramos, a 23-year-old Spaniard, broke onto the ATP scene by winning 13 matches. He had previously won just two at the ATP level in his career. The underdog is dangerous, but on a hard court Tursunov should have little trouble.
