  • Federer takes on Tsonga in London final

    11/27/11 4:54 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer takes on Tsonga in London final The last ATP tournament match of the season pits Roger Federer against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Sunday in London. Federer is going for his sixth title at the World Tour Finals.

Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be squaring off for the 11th time in the careers, the eighth time this season, and the second time in the same tournament when they battle for the World Tour Finals title on Sunday evening.

Federer leads the head-to-head series 7-3, including 5-2 in 2011. The Swiss prevailed in Doha and Rome, Tsonga scored upset wins at Wimbledon and the Rogers Cup, and Federer has now won three in a row (U.S. Open, Paris, London round-robin stage).

Both contestants have clearly been the two best players in London; in order Federer and then Tsonga. Federer went 3-0 in round-robin competition with victories over Tsonga, Rafael Nadal, and Mardy Fish. He went on to dismiss David Ferrer 7-5, 6-3 in Saturday's semifinals.

Tsonga rebounded from his opening loss by ousting Fish and beating Nadal in a must-win situation. The Frenchman maintained his momentum with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Tomas Berdych on Saturday.

"All the time [it's] really exciting to play against Roger," said Tsonga. "It's going to be really special here, for my first final (at the World Tour Finals). It's going to be an amazing atmosphere on the court, and I like that."

"It's obviously a special occasion for me tomorrow; playing my 100th final, possibly winning my 70th (title), winning my sixth at the World Tour Finals," Federer noted. "That would be a record."

Federer is 69-30 lifetime in ATP title matches. Tsonga is a respectable 7-4 in finals, including 2-3 this year (triumphed in Metz and Vienna, most recently lost to Federer in Paris).

Based on current form, recent head-to-head history, and title-match experience, Federer in straight sets is the pick.

I'm a Federer fan, but I have a feeling that Tsonga is going to come out on top in this match. Whenever Fed has tried to break a big record like the one he's going for now (6 year end finals) he has failed. For example, he lost to Nadal in the 2008 Wimbledon final when going for six consecutive titles. Additionally, he lost to del Potro in the 2009 US Open final when going for six in a row. Here's to hoping that he avoids this seeming jinx of his. Either way, it should be an exciting match.

jrbro4 , 11/27/11 1:52 PM

jrbro,

In both of those tournament Federer wasn't beaten in the final before attempting 6th title, here he has already lost one final so i am hopefull he will achive this.

champ00289 , 11/27/11 2:00 PM

Federer definitely look tired in the match against ferrer yesterday.
He was a bit slow and that led to a lot of UE (the ration W/UE was negative).
But this is to be expected, Roger played 3 full tournaments in 4 weeks.

Despite this I think Roger will bring it all today and finish the year in style. If tsonga goes awol then Federer in straights, if Tsonga shows up from the start then Federer in 3.

One thing is for sure Roger has to play better than yesterday if he wants to win his 6ht WTF and break yet another record in the process.

Good luck Roger. Take the trophy home.

bleck , 11/27/11 2:11 PM

Allez Tsonga - looking forward to an exciting match.

schatz , 11/27/11 2:21 PM

Tired? ...with all that schedule fixing?
Ferrer had 16 hours between matches?
What should Tsonga say about fatigue...
Years and years... Of fixing and favouring... Booooooring... And stll...what's the word..? Slamless?

zare , 11/27/11 2:59 PM

Hard to tell how this one is going to fair out. Tsonga is going to be hard to beat. I expect a close match with the FED winning. Tsonga should be tighter (at first) giving FED the advantage, later the FED will get tight too. If the FED manages his first serve well, he will take it to Tsonga and win.

sky , 11/27/11 3:02 PM

zare, I don't even know why I bother but I shall explain it to you.
Roger played 2 tournaments in back to back weeks, rested a week and then played the WTF. Roger will have played 3 full tournaments in 4 weeks. Who cares of Tsonga played his match at 20:00h and Roger played at 14:00h.

Nice to see the haters still come and bash Roger. Only shows that Roger still has it.

Allez Roger.

bleck , 11/27/11 3:13 PM

But..but..Fed isn't the only one playing three tournaments in four weeks! Tsonga played in Beijing(reached SF, lost to Berdych) Shanghai, Vienna(won beating Delpo), Valencia, Paris ( reached final, lost to Fes). Surely, he got to be tired, even though he's younger at 26!

luckystar , 11/27/11 3:48 PM

Thankfully the Tsonga Berdy match got over in 90 mns..had it gotten over in 3 sets and gone beyond 2 hrs 15 mns..the fnal would be over before it started..now atleast Tsonga has a chance to make a match out of it

Yes the WTF scheduling sucks..its unfair to 1 group heavily..and this has nothing to do with Fed..I am saying the second group is at a big disdavantage ..they should atleast have 24 hrs rest period or 1 day gap between semis and finals..

Similarly in Masters events where semis are played on Saturday and finals Sunday..the 1 playing 2nd is at a disadvantage surely particulaly if match goes long which invariably it does as it will be between top players

sanju , 11/27/11 4:38 PM

I think this may go to 3..though Fed will be winner..Too big a match and stage for Tsonga to pull the upset..Fed will want to earn that 6 time WTF winner record..I doubt hell let this pass by ..

sanju , 11/27/11 4:47 PM

Roger is playing well at the moment and Tsonga is unpredictable so I'm leaning towards Roger winning.

nadline , 11/27/11 6:07 PM

This is going to a 3rd. Don't know who will win it, but I'm pretty sure Tsonga will be hungry this time.

Emiliano55 , 11/27/11 6:35 PM

Nadline,

Tsongi is at the moment the most likely to take out Rogi, if and only if, he fires in all cylinders like the SW19 this year but it also depends on which Roger turns up. He looked jaded in the Semi starting slowly and spraying all over the place. David had a very good chance but he seemed less confident. He played very good in patches and allowed Roger to dominate in the end. This final is going to be a close contest. Let us wait and it is starting 20 minutes time.

newfangkc , 11/27/11 6:38 PM

Yes Tsonga may cahllenge but I doubt hell pull off such a big title..Rogers been there done it 5 times..Hes clearly the fav

sanju , 11/27/11 6:39 PM

Roger was sluggish in semi as he went to beda t 2:00 AM is what the TV commentator is saying due to some charity committments and he got back to hotel after 12:00 ..He went to bed yest at 9:30 AM itself :-)

sanju , 11/27/11 6:50 PM

Federer looks so nervious. Tsonga looks like he is playing at his backyard.

Emiliano55 , 11/27/11 6:59 PM

Emi..Fed gives same expression always these days..I have seldom seen him smiling etc in matches..he always seems serious

sanju , 11/27/11 7:02 PM

I'm judging about his movements and his play. Not his face.

Emiliano55 , 11/27/11 7:05 PM

Wow Fed breaks with sensational tennis.

Sienna , 11/27/11 7:13 PM

WOW!!! ROGER! ROGER!! ROGER!!! LOL :)

sky , 11/27/11 7:14 PM

Oops, couple of min ago I wanted to say Fed is slow!Probably he doesnt start flashy in finals

anatolijs , 11/27/11 7:16 PM

Live streaming link...anyone plz ?

tomnjerry2 , 11/27/11 7:18 PM

anatolijs have you seen Tsonga playing this week? and thsi first set is the best he played this week. no slow start and very low unforced errors... anyway there is your set.

Sienna , 11/27/11 7:19 PM

http://www.lshunter.tv/tennis-live-streaming-video.html

anatolijs , 11/27/11 7:19 PM

Fed wins the first set 6-3. Try the following for live link http://www.lshunter.tv/tennis-live-streaming-video.html

RMadhu , 11/27/11 7:19 PM

Now Tsonga needs 2 wake up or it is all over. Federer is menacingly sharp when it matters. But if the giant wakes up we have it.

newfangkc , 11/27/11 7:20 PM

Well what is there to say the first set Tsonga played out of his mind. Only Federer could have pulled this off I feel.

Sienna , 11/27/11 7:20 PM

Federer's playing horrible today. I guess its the pressure to be the frst man to win 6 of these ones.

Let's see what happens now, Tsonga will keep this pace and I don't see Roger rising his level....

Emiliano55 , 11/27/11 7:25 PM

Thank you anatolijs =D

Go Fed Go !!!

tomnjerry2 , 11/27/11 7:26 PM

"zare, I don't even know why I bother but I shall explain it to you."
So don't bother to explain... lol... coz you can't...
You are ignoring that he had more rest than Ferrer ... than more rest than Jo...
...that he is ALWAYS favored by management and so on... and on...
Slamless... it seems to be the painful word... hehe... 5 slams passed, correct me if I am wrong?

zare , 11/27/11 7:27 PM

zare..7 slams..Feds last slam was AO 2010

But to give credit to Fed only 2 other guys have taken remaining slams after AO 2010..Rafa 4 & Djoko 3

doesnt mean Fed cant take any..I think if everything aligns..he can win a slam next year

sanju , 11/27/11 7:30 PM

OMG... how many DW and UE can Jo make in one game???
And than we are listening about ethereal fire...LOOOOL...

zare , 11/27/11 7:32 PM

Sanju... that's possible ofc.... I mean, he is there on top... still in thirties and hot... nobody denies that. I am talking about some equality and same standards for everyone.
Will he start his AO on Monday... Nole and Rafa on Tuesday and poor Andy on Wednesday? That's the point.

zare , 11/27/11 7:37 PM

Fed has changed a lot, takes time before delivering his serves these days and it is paying dividends.

newfangkc , 11/27/11 7:37 PM

This is just prolonging the agony. It's obvious Roger is going to win. Even Paul Annacone is bored.

nadline , 11/27/11 7:39 PM

That is the begining of a blitzering tennis.

newfangkc , 11/27/11 7:40 PM

zare..For AO its okay..reason being..Mens first semi played on Thursday and second semi on Friday and final on Sunday..so theres atleast a days gap

Even French and Wimby are okay

Its USO which is an issue

sanju , 11/27/11 7:41 PM

Tsonga is a &£@{+**)((((((.

Sorry, words fail me.

nadline , 11/27/11 7:47 PM

Fed is not playing that well..its just that Tsonga is overdoing it and going for broke and since margins are so low..hes spraying errors all over..I told you he cant pull this off..you cant win a title match playing go for broke tennis..have to be restrained

sanju , 11/27/11 7:49 PM

No sanju. This is quite simply the difference between an expert professional and an enthusiastic amateur.

ed251137 , 11/27/11 7:52 PM

the FED has made cool moves in the match so far, and NOW serves for the MATCH! Go FED go! C'MON! :)

sky , 11/27/11 7:55 PM

Horrible from Fed..thats horrible..cant believe he couldnt serve it out

sanju , 11/27/11 7:59 PM

WOW! Tsonga is BACK!

sky , 11/27/11 7:59 PM

what the heck was that?

ts38 , 11/27/11 8:00 PM

Federer is going to lose this match

Emiliano55 , 11/27/11 8:01 PM

No come on. Fed is just delaying the moment to give the crowd value for money!

ed251137 , 11/27/11 8:04 PM

Now it's Tsonga's time to choke...
...and that was out.... poor Jo...

zare , 11/27/11 8:04 PM

how can such a horrible line call be made..that was way out

sanju , 11/27/11 8:05 PM

Fed in 2 or Tsonga in 3.

Emiliano55 , 11/27/11 8:07 PM

It's the tiebreak! Let's Go ROGER! C'MON!

sky , 11/27/11 8:07 PM

well hopefully the tiebreak, and Roger ROGER ROGER for the WIN! LOL

sky , 11/27/11 8:09 PM

Federer will massacre him in the tie break.

ed251137 , 11/27/11 8:10 PM

Tiebreak... Fed will win this now.
Sky don't worry :))

zare , 11/27/11 8:10 PM

Fed in 2..Tsonga will make all stupiderrors in tiebreak.lol

sanju , 11/27/11 8:11 PM

Deuce: I swear Bleck and Sienna are hiding behind your sofa :-)

ed251137 , 11/27/11 8:12 PM

I should have said Tsonga will commit hari kari in the tie break

ed251137 , 11/27/11 8:15 PM

5:5... Well that was brave BH by Tsonga...

zare , 11/27/11 8:18 PM

I love the reactions from Mr. Tsonga senior!

ed251137 , 11/27/11 8:18 PM

Well it seems that underestimated JO...

zare , 11/27/11 8:21 PM

WOW! We've got ourselves a MATCH! :) Go FED go! C'MON!

sky , 11/27/11 8:21 PM

1 set all now.. Tsonga takes the TB

RMadhu , 11/27/11 8:21 PM

Gosh the maestro chokes..Served for the match..had match point in tiebreak..

Just shows the Top 4 all have nerves and no one is free from it

sanju , 11/27/11 8:21 PM

Ghosts are invading Federer's head.

Tsonga will pull this off now.

Emiliano55 , 11/27/11 8:21 PM

There was I call Tsonga names. He takes the second set: 76 (6).

nadline , 11/27/11 8:22 PM

Tsonga deserved a third set.

Sienna , 11/27/11 8:22 PM

3rd set it is.

Roger for the win.

bleck , 11/27/11 8:23 PM

Emi..its Fed..cant count him out..hes serving ahead in 3rd which is a huge huge advantage

sanju , 11/27/11 8:23 PM

No he didn't sienna.

Roiger gave him the tie break. Tsonga served 1 1st serve. Roger could've easily got more mini breaks.

Oh well.

bleck , 11/27/11 8:25 PM

Well not sure if I over-estimated Roger or under-estimated Tsonga! But still think Federer will lift his 6th WTF trophy.

ed251137 , 11/27/11 8:26 PM

Now will be test of experienced been there done that champion v/s ready to crash the party amateur

Me things Fed will put all his experience to use and emerge victorious as its not Rafa,Djoko at other end who can counter it back with exp of their own ..its Tsonga..

sanju , 11/27/11 8:27 PM

Sanju WTf Djoker and Nadal would have been in the locker room. Nadal went 3 and 0 and Djoker could not beat Tipsarevic who didnot even qualified for the tournement.

Sienna , 11/27/11 8:35 PM

This time I agree with you bleck... at 5:5...I think, Jo got his first first serve...
Still I think the Fed will pull this...
Woooops London Mayor just got booed ... lol

zare , 11/27/11 8:36 PM

ed34636838386312917464 - "fed will massacre him in the tiebreaker"

LOL

RickyDimon , 11/27/11 8:37 PM

Sienna..Please do not swear..keep the discussions civil..second time you swearing here

Read my statement..I am not saying Rafa or Djoker would ahve won..I am saying they ahve big match experience and could ahve put it to use..which Tsonga doesnt have..and who are you to say they both would have been in locker room?Last I know they both together have won like 27-28 times together against Roger right?

sanju , 11/27/11 8:39 PM

LOL.... sienna...your guy is playing WTF finale.... and you are speaking about Nole and Rafa... Can't live without them isn't it?

zare , 11/27/11 8:40 PM

Ricky: Thanks for pointing out my faux pas for all the world to snigger at :-)

ed251137 , 11/27/11 8:41 PM

Federer beeds a bunch of errors frmo Tsonga in order to win this. otherwise Tsonga will pull it off

Emiliano55 , 11/27/11 8:41 PM

yeah, Tsonga is controlling the outcome

RickyDimon , 11/27/11 8:43 PM

ed2878921374816419824619264912864312649 - well it HAD to be done.

I thought Fed would win it 7-4 or something, but fortunately I was not confident enough to put it in print!

RickyDimon , 11/27/11 8:44 PM

Yes Fed just hung in the first RR match too and let Tsonga blow it up..hell do the same again

sanju , 11/27/11 8:45 PM

whatever be the outcome..its an entertaining finale and worth its money

sanju , 11/27/11 8:47 PM

yes...

zare , 11/27/11 8:49 PM

C'MON ROGER!!!!

bleck , 11/27/11 8:49 PM

Fed picking up at business end..suddenly all first serves in..

sanju , 11/27/11 8:50 PM

4:3...Old Fed would break now! We will see...

zare , 11/27/11 8:51 PM

Fed's serve was deserting him but has come back just in time.

ed251137 , 11/27/11 8:52 PM

Take it Roger for the love of god.

bleck , 11/27/11 8:56 PM

ROGER! ROGER! ROGER! :) C'MON!

sky , 11/27/11 8:58 PM

Let's go Roger let's go!!!

bleck , 11/27/11 8:59 PM

chance for Fed

RickyDimon , 11/27/11 8:59 PM

RIGHT ON CHAMP!! C'MON! BRING IT ON!!! :)

sky , 11/27/11 9:00 PM

sanju , 11/27/11 9:01 PM

Congratulation Sky :))...I was first!

zare , 11/27/11 9:01 PM

WOW! WOW!!!! WOAH! YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! FED! FED! FED! Congrats FEDFANS! :)

sky , 11/27/11 9:02 PM

What a match. I sticked with Roger all the way, win or lose. And he showed that HE IS BACK.

Allez ROGER!!!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!

bleck , 11/27/11 9:03 PM

What a last game to finish off.

newfangkc , 11/27/11 9:04 PM

Thanks zare! Good match! :) FED's serve was not very good today, but hey he WON anyway! :) God loves him! :)

sky , 11/27/11 9:04 PM

The streaki is on. This is just a pitstop. 3 big tournements inthe pocket but there are biggwr fish to fry.... Heh heh Berdych well have to play banana's to stop him.

Sienna , 11/27/11 9:05 PM

Feel sad for Tsonga..he gave it his all..he just plays too risky tennis..41 UE v/s 26 for Fed..37 winners for Tsonga v/s 30 for Fed

The 15 more UE cost the match..

I am npw surprised how Tsonga won 3 sets in a row in Wimby..lol

sanju , 11/27/11 9:06 PM

I'm sure God loves Tsonga too! LOL But today is not his day. The BEST man FED today is the FED! :) Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

sky , 11/27/11 9:07 PM

GO ROGERRRRRR WOOOHOOOOO!!!! 30 and still winning....

Won the most SLams also won the most '5th Slam'. I doubt, Rafa, Novak, Murray can even get to 3 year-ending titles...

Who cares... coz the FED just won and that's all that matters

torres9 , 11/27/11 9:08 PM

Hats off to Roger. And bleck, sienna etc. for keeping the faith.

But dont let's forget Tsonga who turned it into a worthy final.

ed251137 , 11/27/11 9:09 PM

Btw he is now champion of the world?

Sienna , 11/27/11 9:10 PM

why did he say ill c u next year hopefully ? oh is it coz its the top 8 who qualify and no one is assured of place in Top 8

sanju , 11/27/11 9:12 PM

http://www.tennistalk.com/en/news/20111127/Federer_wins_sixth_World_To ur_Finals_title

RickyDimon , 11/27/11 9:12 PM

Congrats to all you Fed fans!

mojo , 11/27/11 9:13 PM

Guys..there is no 5th slam..hehe..slams you have to win 7 matches over 5 sets..Masters n WTF its 5 over 3 sets..

No tourney is called 5th slam ;-)..There are only 4 slams :-)

sanju , 11/27/11 9:15 PM

sanju , after the slams this is probably the most prestigious event.

nirv02 , 11/27/11 9:18 PM

I believe it is called a world championship? Tha is a unofficial title. SO we were looking at the 5times world champion winning a 6th and defending AGAIN.... I thought Luckystar said it would be impossible after RR 1th match. Heh heh

Sienna , 11/27/11 9:19 PM

..also Sony Ericsson open is unofficially called the fifth slam, "" See why many consider the Sony Ericsson Open the "fifth" Grand Slam.""

http://www.grandslamtennistours.com/sony_ericsson_open.html

nirv02 , 11/27/11 9:21 PM

sanju there's a reason why i put those ' '... it's just regarded by some as the '5th Slam'...

After Slams, this is the evnet where the best of the best square off against each other and Federer's six year-ending titles just underlines his gr8 career record.

torres9 , 11/27/11 9:23 PM

Congrats to Roger.

Shame about his fans.

nadline , 11/27/11 9:27 PM

Well it was a great end of the season for Federer. It was Djokovic's year though overall (what was his final record?) Fed wasn't perfect (except vs Nadal) but did enough to win. He didn't have to beat Djokovic or Murray (nor did he have to in order to win Basel or Paris). But it's a great win and hopefully gives him confidence for the AO.

He is 30 years old, and yet came close to 2 grand slams (match points vs Djokovic at the US Open, and played a geat French finals vs Nadal apart from the final set).

In the end, I sitll feel Nadal will surpass Fed's Slam numbers. 5 more French Opens will get him nearly there.

Bharata , 11/27/11 9:30 PM

what a yawn if Rafa overhauls Federer with 13 French Opens, 1 AO, 2 Wimby, 1 USO.

torres9 , 11/27/11 9:34 PM

Miami is generally referred to as the fifth major

RickyDimon , 11/27/11 9:37 PM

It's really sad to see the fed fans get so fanatic about winning the WTF. It used to be that that kind of praise and optimism would be reserved for a slam... However I suppose with barely any significant titles in a year for old fed they would jump on the chance to revive their hopes...

Good win for Federer but surprised at how much emphasis fed fans are putting on this win, against a severely under par nadal and then ferrer and tsonga...

willmw101 , 11/27/11 9:43 PM

bharata, you really believe nadal will be able to win the most physically challenging slam at age 29/30?

If you wanna bet on it I'm in.

bleck , 11/27/11 9:44 PM

willmw101, we all know the 2 most important tiles are monte carlo and barcelona...

lol ;)

6th title at the WTF, a record, surpassing names like sampras and lendl.

GOAT argument for Roger just got stronger.

bleck , 11/27/11 9:47 PM

Federer has now won 16 majors and 6 tour finals that makes it 22 big titles for Roger Nadal has 10 majors and 0 tour finals so Nadal is still far behind

tennis2011 , 11/27/11 9:54 PM

hi Bleck, ha ha I won't bet, but I understand your skepticism. But Nadal just plays too effective a game on clay, just keeps the ball in play patiently. The only guy who we can s ay for sure can handle that style on clay is Djokovic...and how can he keep up his 2011 level?

I think unless Murray learns to deal with adversity, I figure Djokovic and Nadal will trade Grand Slam s between t hem for the next few years. Hopefully Fed can get in there with one or two more.

Bharata , 11/27/11 9:54 PM

willmw101, we all know the 2 most important tiles are monte carlo and barcelona...

lol ;)

bleck,

I never even remotely implied that barcelona and monte carlo are particularly important. You're the one placing unjustified importance on a glorified masters tourney.

Fed will stay on 16

willmw101 , 11/27/11 11:45 PM

If federer will stay on 16 or not I don't know but one thing for me is cristal clear neither nadal nor djokovic will surpass Roger's slam tally.

GS>WTF>Masters 1000>500>250

It's the most important tournament after the slams wether you want to believe in it or kid yourself.

bleck , 11/27/11 11:51 PM

Nadal fan = too annoying and arrogant and blind always

looks down on Sampras and past players. Fake time-out. gamesmanship. cheat. too annoying noisy always. excuse injury. retire for likely lose.

overrated by his arrogant blind fans

I hope. Novak No.1 and Roger No. 2

tennisnba , 11/27/11 11:56 PM

i couldn't care less if djokovic or nadal reach or surpass 16.

GS>everything else

If you really believe that in 40 years people will remember wtf wins you are deluded

willmw101 , 11/27/11 11:58 PM

Unless Nadal starts dealing with serious knee injuries, he will sure surpass Roger's GS record. Roger is having flashes of his vintages tennis but I don't see him winning another slam.

Anyway, time will tell.

Emiliano55 , 11/28/11 12:40 AM

nadal has won 0 world tour finals he is just an average player indoors

tennis2011 , 11/28/11 12:41 AM

Sampras is still 2nd with 14 majors and 5 tour finals = 19 big titles I dont think Nadal is as good as Sampras

tennis2011 , 11/28/11 12:43 AM

Congratulations to Roger. To his fans, well, I'd be banned if I wrote what I'd like to write. Suffice to say, they need to grow up.

Fanfan , 11/28/11 12:45 AM

Sampras had no weakness he never struggled against any player Nadal has struggled against Djokovic and Federer has against Nadal but Sampras never had any such problems

tennis2011 , 11/28/11 12:45 AM

nadal has won 0 world tour finals he is just an average player indoors
tennis2011, 11/28/11 12:41 AM

Good thing indoor tennis is almost non-existent and irrelevant then

willmw101 , 11/28/11 1:04 AM

Just because nadal struggles indoors its irrelevant? thats just a typical nadal fan Great players like Sampras and Federer have excelled indoors Nadal hasnt

tennis2011 , 11/28/11 1:13 AM

I still believe that Sampras was the greatest player of all time even though Federer has won more majors but still Sampras had the best serve was unbeatable on grass and almost unbeatable in 5 set matches on hard court he was a nightmare to play against FEderer and Nadal are not nightmare to play against they do give you chances where as Sampras often didnt even give his opponent a chance to break his serve, both Federer and Nadal would have struggled big time against Sampras.

tennis2011 , 11/28/11 1:18 AM

tennis 2011,

yeah sampras was a real "NIGHTMARE" on clay: a much more prominent part of the season, 3 masters and 1 grand slam. No grand slams are played on indoor hard court... your argument is irrelevant.

willmw101 , 11/28/11 1:28 AM

and no tennis 2011 its is not:Just because nadal struggles indoors its irrelevant?

Indoor tennis results are irrelevant because barely any tournaments are played indoors.

I can't see you creating a comeback which makes sense, so don't bother.

willmw101 , 11/28/11 1:36 AM

Not so much on clay but on other courts Sampras was a nightmare to play against. I would like to see Nadal play Sampras on grass or hard courts, he would struggle to win sets let alone matches Sampras was not mentally weak he would have given nadal a very hard time, Federer would struggle against Sampras too.

tennis2011 , 11/28/11 1:40 AM

Why do you keep on talking about nadal?? are you obsessed with him?

willmw101 , 11/28/11 1:41 AM

World tour Finals the 5th biggest event 2 master series events and multiple other events are played indoors just because nadal is no good indoors does not make indoor tennis irrelevant. Allgreat players whether it be Borg or Mcenroe or Sampras or Federer have all achieved great results indoors thats just goes to show how versatile some one is Nadal hasnt proved himself indoors not yet simple as that

tennis2011 , 11/28/11 1:44 AM

I forgot Ivan lendl another great player who had success indoors

tennis2011 , 11/28/11 1:46 AM

So if sampras didn't prove himself on clay (a surface with a grand slam and a lot more significant tournaments than indoor hard courts) then how is he the best player ever, as you stated above??

willmw101 , 11/28/11 2:04 AM

He didnt do too well on clay but he was the best player on all other surfaces he was unbeatable on Grass almost unbeatable Hard courts and on also indoors carpet was also in fashion back in the 1990s Sampras also played great on carpet. Sampras always had the edge in mental toughness and I dont see any one in todays tennis who could have competed with Sampras over 5 sets just 1 example Djokovic vs Nadal Us open final Djokovic broke 3 times in set # 3 but still lost the set it in a Tie Break, so 3 breaks were not good enough to secure the set you cand even think of getting 3 breaks in a set vs pete Sampras who often won 2 3rd of second serve points and served 2nd serve aces on big points if you were playing Pete sampras a break down was almost as good as a set down and your best hope was to get to hold your serve all the way and get to a Tie break and even in a Tie break Situation Pete Sampras with huge 1st and 2nd serve always had the upper hand.

tennis2011 , 11/28/11 3:14 AM

tennis2011,

Why are you comparing different era's of tennis? Hasn't anyone (or your common sense) ever told you that it's fruitless?? Sampras was a great player, no one is arguing otherwise. However claiming that indoor tennis results are even close to being as important as clay results is just naive.

willmw101 , 11/28/11 3:19 AM

Rafa is not good on indoors..point taken..its no rocket science to know that..Hes won just 1 title indoors..and maybe because you ahve just the last 1.5 month played on indoors maybe he wont bother to change his game much to suit it..that doesn't make his achievements of 105 weeks as No 1, 10 slams (4 outside clay), 19 Masters any less significant

Get on with it guys..Stop berating sumone just coz his chips are down since past 2 months..Fed doesnt need to be called great by putting Rafa down..Fed is great irrespective of that..

And yes WTF is not 5th slam ..It may be important but its not a slam..Feds slam tally till date is 16, not 22..stop twisting facts to make any player look great..You need 7 matches of 5 sets (max of 35 sets and min of 21 sets) to win a slam..you need max of 15 sets and min of 10 to win WTF..do you see the difference? you ahve to play twice the amount to win a slam..and worse is you can lose a RR match(sometimes even 2) and still go and win the title..how on earth can it be equal to a slam then? Last I know you lose a round, you are out of a slam :-)

sanju , 11/28/11 5:07 AM

Bharata..If Rafa has to win 17 majors..I sure dont want 13 of them to be RG....min 2 of each slam is a MUST..rest can be RG :-) It needs to be more rounded and variety .. I would be happy if he wins 7 RG and gets the record for max RG titles..

Sumhow I want him to get atleast 4 Wimbys..dont know why..Wimby is special

sanju , 11/28/11 5:22 AM

The WTF is not a 5th slam, agreed. It's the 5th most important title however.
And the fact that nadal has 1 final doesn't bode well for him. Nadal skipped paris because he wanted this title. He rested 3/4 weeks because he wanted to win this title.

Yes you can lose 1 match (or even 2) and make it to the semis but in this tournament there are no easy draws. You play against the top 8 players of the year. You play against the best of the best.

And Roger last year beat nadal, murray and djokovic to win the title.
This year djokovic and murray didn't make it to the semis so he only beat nadal.

Murray said that is it wasn't the WTF he wouldn't have played beause of his injury. So murray, nadal and federer definitely think it is an important title. Djokovic I guess so too. Fish was ijured just a couple weeks before and maybe not yet totally at his best yet he played.

The top players' actions show they highly value this tournament, this tournament gives you the most points after the slams.

So this tournament is the 5th most important tournament.

bleck , 11/28/11 9:36 AM

Also, lol at the nadal fans who were already predicting Roger to fall from #4 (before Roger won 3 title in a row, that obviously shut them up).

Rankings as of today:
Djokovic - 13675
nadal - 9575
Federer - 8170
Murray - 7380
Ferrer - 4880

3290 points separate Roger from ferrer. Keep dreaming...

bleck , 11/28/11 9:41 AM

"It's the 5th most important title however."

"it is an important title

"they highly value this tournament, this tournament gives you the most points after the slams."

"this tournament is the 5th most important tournament"

ugh, all you do is repeat the same thing over and over and over and over. The WTF is an important tournament in a calendar year, BUT no one will care about WTF wins after the era is judged as a whole. Get a grip!

willmw101 , 11/28/11 10:43 AM

bleck, I don't think ANY Nadal fans EVER wished Roger to fall from 4, on the contrary, it's Fedfans who have been wishing Rafa to go out of the top 20.

nadline , 11/28/11 10:49 AM

nadline please, I know what I read here on TT when Ferrer was just over 1000 points away from Roger (before basel).

willmw101, yes I repeated it several times just to see if I could get it through your thick head. But I just didn't say it was, I gave some reasons why it it. Because let's face, it's a fact, the WTF is "the 5th most important title".

The reasons: - most points after the slams
- many players played it even being injured and needing to rest.
See I had to repeat myself again. I do it to teach you something and yet you complain. How ungrateful.

Last but not least, if you think players legacies are only judged by #slams you're wrong.

bleck , 11/28/11 11:13 AM

Last but not least, if you think players legacies are only judged by #slams you're wrong.

bleck, 11/28/11 11:13 AM

Proof?? Any proof?? No, didn't think so. LOL at Federer fans getting excited by a masters event!!

FYI, your "reasons" are largely irrelevant when considering how the current era of players will be judged in ten or more years time.

FYI 2, your english isn't good enough to argue this very laboured point.

willmw101 , 11/28/11 12:05 PM

bleck..it maybe 5th most important as it gives 1500 pts too if one wins all matches..All I am saying is we cant call it 5th slam or make stmts like 'Roger has won 22 important big titles and Rafa only 10 or Djoko only 5'..Degree of importance may differ but all masters are equally important too as they give 1000 pts and players do take it very seriously

So yes WTF maybe 5th important title but its not a 5th slam and Roger has won 16 slams (not 22) , Rafa 10, Novak 4. These are the real facts.

sanju , 11/28/11 12:12 PM

sanju, Yes I agree with you. It's not the 5th slam, I never said that. It's a tournament on it's own category apart from slams and masters 1000, it's in between.

willmw101, I guess my english is good enough that you understand it. Also no one has ever complained about it. If you wish to pay for a course I'll gladly take on your offer.

Ask any tennis expert. It's so obvious that I can't even fathom how you can't see that reducing any player carrer to just slam wins is being simplistic and reducionist.

You showing up after Roger won 3 titles in 4 weeks says it all. I guess I don't need to add insult to injury. All the sucess Roger has had the past month is killing you inside and all the biterness is easily perceived in your posts.
Get well soon. Wish you a speedy recovery (maybe when the clay season comes).

Stay well. ;)

bleck , 11/28/11 12:36 PM

Ha from the sounds of it if I were to pay for an english course for you I'd be throwing my money in to a pit of uselessness.

I don't support nadal so not much of a comeback I'm afraid.

I support objectivity regarding tennis legacies and you are just an obsessed federer fan boy with no idea.

"stay well ;)" as you apparently say...

willmw101 , 11/28/11 12:51 PM

willmw101, The British Council disagrees with you. And I would go with them when judging someone's language skills.

Also, glad to see you didn't reply to the bitterness part. If you're hurting really bad then it's only going to get worse come 2012.

"I support objectivity regarding tennis legacies... " Didn't know you were a comedian.
First an English teacher and now a comedian. What else do you do?!

Seen that despite supporting "objectivity" you lack that trait it will be very difficult to show you the reality. So I'll just be a little selfish and not try to take you out of the delusion you're in as far as tennis is concerned. Maybe you could devote yourself to another sport, who knows. Good luck with that.

Stay well and hope you have a speedy recovery. ;)

bleck , 11/28/11 1:04 PM

The british council?! So that'll put you on language par with bin men then... good to know...

You haven't addressed any of the holes in your argument that I have laid bare, and therefore you've resorted to arguing like a 6 year old.

Hope the bins are'nt too smelly today, ask for some rubber gloves.

willmw101 , 11/28/11 1:53 PM

Yep a player's legacy is not judged only by no.of slams won, that will put things into perspective; the past greats are all greats and some may be greater than Fed. So who are those who emphasize so much about slam counts and worry that Fed's slam count record may be overtaken?

Whether Rafa or Nole will overtake Fed in the slam counts, nobody knows, so bleck's claim that they can't and won't do it is just as good as anyone else's guess, bleck doesn't determine the fate of these players! Anyway not everyone is obsessed with this slam count thing like many Fed fans do.

sienna's claim that I said Fed would not beat Tsonga has to be viewed with a pinch of salt. Please note that players like Berdych or Tsonga are good against the top four guys only before the finals. Please note that these two players have never beaten the top four guys in any final. They are good as obstacles to the top four guys on their way to the final, but they can't beat the top four guys in the finals! Just check, since 2008 till now, I believe the top four guys have never lost to Berdych or Tsonga in any final. There're reasons why the two have taken so long to win their titles this year, since two years ago? They just lack the experience and the mental toughness to hold their nerves in the finals or even in the semis, especially against the top four. Clearly this hard court season, we've finally seen some improvement in their performances, hence the titles they won.

luckystar , 11/28/11 1:56 PM

This year is dominated by the top 4 guys.. all but one tournament which featured at least one of the top 4 are also won by one of the top 4. They clearly have the edge over the rest of the field....

As far as legacy concerned, I'm looking at the complete package:

# of slams,
# How complete is their resume (Davis-cup, gold medals at olympics, WTF titles)
# How evenly divided are the titles... in other words, could they win on Hard, grass and clay.... Or is it purely one surface.
# of weeks ranked #1
# of years ended as #1
# of titles won during their career
# Special features (Did they achieve a (career) Grand Slam, have they done anything special... records broken and so on)

Bonker , 11/28/11 2:30 PM

Yes Congrats Fed Fans on an amazing end of year!
ALSO, has anyone noticed how much Roger Federer?s father looks like Santa Claus?!
Well he looks like Santa to me, I was almost expecting Rudolf the Red nosed Reindeer to be sitting next to him in Rogers box, but all I got was Thierry Henry!
No doubt Rudolf?s getting everything prepared for this important time of the year.
Uh Oh!
I?m a hater again aren?t I? A jealous hater etc
Maybe I am, Oh I DO wish I had 16 slams of my own, I?d put them in a line, shine them and count them ALL DAY!
Why stop at 16 of-course, I?d really want 23 so I could tell Steffi to `suck it` too!
Or maybe 47 ect blah blah.
; )

Sosueme , 11/28/11 3:15 PM

sosueme, Then I'm a hater too. I wouldn't even mind having 0 slams but 8 masters 1000 and over 18 million dollars in earnings. ;)

bleck , 11/28/11 3:35 PM

18 million?

That's just prize money Bleck, if he (ever) wins Wimbledon, that's when the fun really starts for him.

Sosueme , 11/28/11 4:09 PM

Yes I meant prize money. Murray must've won a lot more with sponsorship deals.

bleck , 11/28/11 5:12 PM

wilmw101, You're bitter about Roger recent tournament wins and your sole purpose coming to TT is to bash and insult people. I on the other hand post on TT because I like to discuss tennis related issues.

I'm sure you are salivating for my reply just so you can throw a couple more insults, be my guest. I've been able to acess that you lack any tennis knowledge and you also have some behavioural problems. As for tennis I tried to help you but you wouldn't let me. As for your behavioural problems I can't really help you.
All I can say is that there's a lot of anger and bitterness inside you and that translates in your posts.

Seen that my intent is to discuss tennis and your's is to bash and insult people I will not reply to your posts from here on out.

Stay well and hope you have a speedy recovery.
