  • Federer faces Tsonga in Paris final

    11/13/11 1:32 AM | Kelli DeMario
Federer faces Tsonga in Paris final World No. 4 Roger Federer looks to capture his first BNP Paribas Open title as he squares off against former title winner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Sunday. The players will be meeting for the sixth time this season.

Third seed Roger Federer has compiled a 5-3 series lead against 6th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga entering into the championship final. The two have contested a trio of hard-court meetings this year, with the Swiss winning two of three matches.

Federer advanced to his first BNP Paribas Open after ousting 5th seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The 30-year-old has not surrendered a set during the tournament, having defeated Adrian Mannarino, Richard Gasquet and Juan Monaco in straights.

Federer is bidding for his second title in as many weeks following a successful run at home in Basel. The veteran will attempt to snag his 18th Masters shield on Sunday.

Tsonga saved three match points during his semifinal clash with John Isner. The Frenchman struck a dozen aces through to a 3-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(3) victory in two hours and 58 minutes.

The 26-year-old will be looking to record his second championship win in a Masters 1000 event.

Prediction: An in-form Federer in straight sets.

Fleur , 11/13/11 11:49 AM

Federer this is the time to show Tsonga who's boss.
It'll be really good heading into the WTF having beaten 2 of the possible adversaries.

Good luck Roger.

2flow, 11/13/11 11:33 AM

Jo had Friday off. Roger had to work.

numero , 11/13/11 2:42 PM

Anyone think Tsonga has a chance?
numero, you're right, so do you think Tsonga will make this competitive at least?

deuce , 11/13/11 3:19 PM

Ohhhh Tsonga completely out of game...
There is no crowd who can help him now...

zare , 11/13/11 3:38 PM

This is not a match. It's a massacre.

ed251137 , 11/13/11 3:38 PM

Tsonga hasn't 'turned up'!

nadline , 11/13/11 3:40 PM

At least Tsonga can console himself with a baguette rather than a bagel.

ed251137 , 11/13/11 3:41 PM

deuce@ 3.19...ask a silly question, lol

deuce , 11/13/11 3:45 PM

As the French commentators love to say, Tsonga is lacking lucidity today. He got lucky with the two net cords that went out for Roger but was still not able to grab the BP.

ed251137 , 11/13/11 4:01 PM

ed, he's far too impatient, thought that against Isner, not in his nature to be otherwise, I suppose.

deuce , 11/13/11 4:06 PM

A poor service game from Fed and Tsonga still can't cash in...*exasperated sigh*

deuce , 11/13/11 4:19 PM

Exactly. It has so often been his downfall. He can make the most amazing shots under pressure and then hit relatively easy returns into the net. It's why I've never been able to get that excited by his game.

ed251137 , 11/13/11 4:28 PM

Chris Wilkinson has just announced it's been a very up and down match for Tsonga. I would say it was down 99% of the time.

Congratulations to Federer who must be one very happy bunny.

ed251137 , 11/13/11 4:40 PM

Congratulations to Fed and his fans............................

Is Mirka pregnant again? Wouldn't surprise me, she looks big.........................

rafaisthebest , 11/13/11 4:43 PM

Congrats Federer.. great show

Clear favourite for WTF now is Roger..lets see if any of the other 7 can trouble him in WTF ..do we see a repeat of last year where Fed was under par for first 9 months and sprung back to life in last 3 tournaments

sanju , 11/13/11 4:43 PM

Fed too good today. Congrats to him.
ed lol, agree with you. Joe-W had no energy, was pretty pathetic actually. He certainly didn't make use of his opportunities and today Fed offered no second chances.
BTW really weird to see Greg and Tim's names on the winner's board and not Andy's! What's going on?

deuce , 11/13/11 4:44 PM

Ricky..Isnt Roger now the clear fav by a mile for WTF?Do you see any of the other 7 troubling him

sanju , 11/13/11 4:46 PM

I have to admit that Roger looks impressive right now.

nadline , 11/13/11 4:49 PM

sanju, if you're going to be surprised at Fed doing well in Paris and WTF then you have to be surprised when Rafa does well at Monte Carlo and RG!! Dude, in-door hard court is to Fed what out-door clay is to Rafa......................best playing surfaces!!

rafaisthebest , 11/13/11 4:53 PM

RIFB..I am not surprised at Roger doing well..I said 2nd year in a row he has spring back to life in last 2 months after being subpar first months..It was the story last year and this year too.

Ironically he played badly in all indoor courts in 2009 when he won 2 slams (RG, Wimby)..he didnt even qualify for semis that year in WTF n i guess even in 2008

sanju , 11/13/11 4:55 PM

sorry sanju, I don't get the irony...........................still not surprised Fed is doing well on indoor hard court.......

rafaisthebest , 11/13/11 5:02 PM

hi sanju, I think that Federer's motivation to play goes up and down, and if he feels he has had a good Slam year he loses interest somewhat in the Masters' events. Whenever he has something to prove he tends to show up more focussed, which might explain the trend you noticed.

Do people think Fed is going for more percentage shots the last 2 weeks? His UE count is down and he's not going for so many first strike winners. I think it's more effective, but againt t he super defense of Nadal, Djokovic and Murray I guess he feels pressure not to end up in long rallies.

Bharata , 11/13/11 5:05 PM

Tsonga was up... dawn... well who cares :)
Better man won... and that was Fed ... no doubt about it. Thirty years and still in top...
Congratulations to Federer and all Fed fans...
...and now .... to London!

zare , 11/13/11 5:11 PM

Yep congrats to Fed, never in doubt who will win this title. Tsonga looked so lost out there in the first set. A difference in class there; a huge gap between the top four and the rest. All nine Masters won by top four this year, is this the first time? I think the WTF would also be won by one of the top four, let's see.

luckystar , 11/13/11 5:31 PM

It may come as a surprise to you Fleur but most tennis fans enjoy watching tennis for its own sake and are capable of congratulating Federer. Even more so when he plays as well as he has done in the past two tournaments and are pleased to see him finishing the year on such a high. Some of us are, of course, hoping to see our favourites put up some resistance in a few days time :-)

ed251137 , 11/13/11 5:39 PM

sanju, 11/13/11 4:59 PM Strictly speaking you are Off Topic but it's hard, I know, when there is no current thread to discuss Rafa's state of health, mind, and game. We'll have to wait for Ricky's match preview before we can do that.

ed251137 , 11/13/11 5:46 PM

Well done to federer he finally won a title this year. Shame it was only a masters...

willmw101 , 11/13/11 5:47 PM

^^^He's won 3 titles so far this year. Not many can say they've won more. One Masters 1000 is better than none. Roger's awesome!

numero , 11/13/11 5:56 PM

So is Roger now back to No 3 in world?

Looks like as he adds 600 pts compared to last year and will nudge past Murray

sanju , 11/13/11 6:22 PM

sanju: Lucky is the person who can answer that one. She has all the figures at her fingertips. I think it is possible but will depend on the WTF results - there is also a massive bonus if the winner is unbeaten in all his matches.

ed251137 , 11/13/11 6:42 PM

If Roger can go undefeated it's 1500 more points so he may take over #3 if that happens.

numero , 11/13/11 6:54 PM

sanju, the difference in ranking points between Murray and Fed is 710 after Fed's Paris win. If Fed wins WTF without losing a RR match, than Murray has to reach the final of WTF (if he lose a RR match he'll be 10 points ahead of Fed; lose two RR match, he'll be no.4; not losing any RR match, he'll be 210 points ahead of Fed).

Any other combinations is possible and as long as Fed doesn't get >710 points more than Murray, Murray will keep his no.3 ranking.

luckystar , 11/13/11 6:59 PM

lucky, it's too close for my comfort and for me that's a bit of a bummer because at the mo. Fed looks to be in gr8 form going into WTF.
Rafa and Nole a bit unknown quantities as regards form too.

deuce , 11/13/11 7:06 PM

Lucky..isnt it 200 pts for each RR win, 400 for semis and 500 for final making it total of 1500 for winner if he wins every match?

sanju , 11/13/11 7:11 PM

I personally think Roger n Andy will give it their all to close yearat No 3..hence any matchup between both RR or otherwise (semi, final0 will be mouthwatering prospect

Also hope Djoko doesnt pull out neither does Mardy..Janko or Almargo in the mix will just tilt the mouthwatering matchups to couple of notches down

sanju , 11/13/11 7:14 PM

My wishlist : Semi Djoko v/s Rafa and Roger v/s Murray

sanju , 11/13/11 7:16 PM

Looked up atpworldtour..Roger has won 6/9 masters and reached final of all 9..the ones excludng him as titles are MC, Rome, Shanghai

Rafa has reached finals of 7/9 and has won 5/9 masters with ones excluding him - Cincinnati, Bercy, Shanghai, Miami

sanju , 11/13/11 7:34 PM

Sanju: if your wish list were to happen, watching those matches will probably shorten my life by several years ;-)

Deuce: We can see Federer is on a roll and going into the WTF he will be on a real high from winning in Paris.

Rafa is an unknown quantity for the moment but there are rumours he is still having problems with his foot. Nole is a bit of an enigma but there are signs of cracks in his armour and also it's not clear how bad his injuries really are. I think Andy is as well placed as he will ever be to make it to the final provided he has learnt his lesson from the enounter with Birdy at Bercy. Whether he can derail Roger remains to be seen but then there would be no fun if we knew the answer to that in advance, would there? lol

ed251137 , 11/13/11 8:34 PM

I just came on here to see the result. Not a surprise. I just wanted to say to deuce regarding your comment @ 4:06 pm, that you are spot on. I kept thinking to myself watching his match with Isner, that Tsonga should slow it down a bit. It's really important to take a bit of time especially when you are in a tough match.

Congratulations to Fed! He is playing great tennis right now and seems to be peaking for London.

Again I agree with deuce's comment that Rafa and Nole unknown quantities. We haven't seen Rafa for a while and Nole has not looked good since he came back.

We should see some outstanding tennis in London.

Nativenewyorker , 11/13/11 8:36 PM

Wow the most of you are trying to make genuine nice comments about Fed's win.
Only Rintb is a litte bit cheacky devil with comment about Mirka and of course Zare really made the day after the Roger win. There was not a false note inthe comment. In the afternoon she tried to slaugther the twins and after the match he was full of praise.....
We are one happy family totally inspired by TMF. If 1 men can make such a difference. Thank you all for the nice words. I think we can keep this going and start to act like this is normal behaviour for this site,

Sienna , 11/13/11 9:58 PM

point wise the set up for WTF is in advantage for Fed- Because you only get the reward for being in semi by winning it. The winner of semi gets 400 loser gets only RR points. Winner of final additional 500,

So when Fed is to meet Murray in semi it is all in the air because they would then play for max 900 points, Only if Fed reaches semi with 2 or less victories this would not hold.

anywayzzzz It is still possible Muzza fans!
Bring it on. The two players who play the best tennis of the top 4 are Feday.....

Sienna , 11/13/11 10:41 PM

Seriously I don't see the need to make light of Mirka. I guess now that Roger's on fire and some can't talk about Roger being overtaken my Ferrer (now that was funny!) or dropping out of the top 10 the snide remarks turn to Mirka. I don't see any of the other top players' SO being poked fun at.

Maybe she just like chewing gum. So what?

numero , 11/14/11 12:25 AM

Wow Zare congratulating the man on a masters win where youre only cam for some cash grabbing handout money- And in the next comment slicing his children where others are taking it to his wife. How low can yougo? Wait what is in store after he wins WTF. Probably mom and dad.

Sienna , 11/14/11 12:35 AM

NNY

Children?

Anyway we were supposed to turn a new leaf. You might remember last week Cheryl´s new rules and todaywith the Luckystar appeal. You are tking about stuff that happened way before those pleads, I dont mind I know lots of stuff about djoker the smoker and Nada the gambler.

Sienna , 11/14/11 12:50 AM

Well said NNY, again. The rule should apply to all players, not only to Fed. And we know who are the ones bringing up Rafa's girlfriend and his personal lives, etc, even coming up with some made up stories!!

deuce - life is unpredictable isn't it? Before the start of Paris, some were talking about Murray catching Rafa for the no.2 position, if Murray wins both Paris and London and Rafa doesn't make it to the semi of WTF. How things change now, once Murray is out of Paris at the QF stage, his no.3 ranking is now under threat instead. So now only the top two positions are secured, in fact rank no.3-8 can still change around during the WTF, depending on who wins the WTF. Ferrer's no.5 ranking may be under threat too, if Tsonga wins it all without losing a match and Ferrer fails to win a match.

sanju - Rafa has reached the finals of 8 out of the 9 Masters; he only misses Cincy.(reached final of Paris in 2007, lost to Nalby; reached final of Shanghai in 2009, lost to Davy; reached finals of Miami thrice, in 2005, 2008 & 2011). He won twice at IW and Canada. Rafa and Fed are the only two players who have won Madrid on both indoor hard court and on clay. Rafa and Murray both won at Montreal and Toronto of Canada; Fed won at Toronto only and Nole at Montreal.

luckystar , 11/14/11 1:00 AM

lucky,

I don't know how you have all this information at your fingertips. It's amazing how you keep track of the rankings and who may be in jeopardy depending on the results at London. I had no idea that Ferrer's #5 ranking could be in danger if Tsonga wins it all without losing a match and Ferrer fails to win a match. I don't know that this scenario will play out, but it's nice to know.

I know that there are a number of scenarios in which Fed could get the #3 ranking back and Murray could hold on to it. I am sure you are on top of it, but it does get dizzying with this RR format in London.

I appreciate all of your efforts to keep us up to date about rankings situation. Also that last paragraph directed to sanju was also quite interesting to read. You are like an encyclopedia of tennis! :)

Nativenewyorker , 11/14/11 1:10 AM

ed.. well but isthat that the best dream matchup for semis.. We have seen Fed..Rafa in WTF semis, Nadal-Murray in WTF semis..lets have Fed-Djoko and Murray - Fed for a change..

Let Murray - Fed slug it out on court for No 3, it will be high voltage and that means super tennis

Whats with these rumours aboutshoulder injury of Rafa? Any credence?

Thanks lucky for always clarifying our doubts and answering our queries.

Sorry 1 more qn- top 2 of each RR go and face the people of other RR group right? I mean 1 of group 1 faces 2 of group 2 right and 1 of group 2 faces 2 of group 1 right?

sanju , 11/14/11 6:51 AM

I have to say Fed and Rafa have the best footwork around. Now though both are comparatively slower then five years ago, they're still quick around the courts. The Paris SF and Final looked like slow matches compared to that match I mentioned. Even some of Tsonga's matches this year at Queens, where I was awed by how quickly Tsonga moved on grass, still couldn't compare to those matches that Fedal played back then, on hard and on grass courts.

luckystar , 11/14/11 7:44 AM

I think Rafa- Murray and Fed-Djoko should be in same RR group so that they dont square in the semis

To balance the group I think Mardy, Berdych in Fed, Djoko group and Ferrer, Tsonga in Rafa-Murray group

R Group 1: Djoko, Fed, Mardy,Berdych

RR Group 2: Rafa, Murray, Tsonga, Ferrer

SEmis : Rafa v/s Djoko, Fed v/s Murray

Final : May the best men compete and win it :-)

sanju , 11/14/11 9:40 AM

Lucky: I've said in the past, you should go on one of those 'Who wants to be a Millionaire' type quiz shows with tennis as your speciality. You could clean up. lol.

I know you have an awesome knowledge of tennis combined with a formidable memory and can access that data at will. I didnt know you also have an extensive library of DVDs. No wonder you can make such astute observations on players' techniques and the development of their games. It is fascinating to compare the progression over the years but what always amazes me is how much each players' level can change so dramatically from one week to the next, one day to the next - even from one set to the next.

I guess it is that element of unpredictability which makes it such an engrossing sport to follow.

ed251137 , 11/14/11 11:49 AM

about the no.3 ranking possibilities:

?from ATP website: "Barclays ATP World Tour finals 1500 for undefeated Champion (200 for each round robin match win, plus 400 for a semi-final win, plus 500 for the final win)."

So it goes like this (it took me a while though)
RR: round robin match

1) Roger: winner (8170 point) and won all 3 RR matches Murray: Runner up and won all three RR (8380 point) or 2 RR ( 8180) >> then Murray No.3

2) Roger winner (8170 point ) and won all 3 RR matches, Murray Runner up and won 1 RR match (7980 point) >>>> then Federer No.3

3) Roger: wins but lost 1 RR (7970 point ) or 2 RR (7770 point) , Murray Runner up and lost 1 RR(8180 point) or 2 RR (7980 point) >> then Murray No.3

4) Roger runner up and won all 3 RR (7670 point), Murray lost in SF and won all RR (7980 point) or 2 RR (7780 point )>> then Murray No.3

5) Roger: runner up and won all RR (7670 point) Murruy lost in SF and won 1 RR (7580 point) >>>> then Federer No.3

6) Roger: runner up and lost 1 RR ( 7470 point) or 2 RR (7270 point), Murray lost in SF and lost 1 RR (7780 point) or 2 RR (7580 point) >>> Then Murray No.3

7) Roger lost in SF , Murray reached SF or more >>>> it's Murray No.3

any other scenario >>> unfortunatly Murray No.3

that's all about it :P

Sosueme - Mirka bashing is out of bounds. Those posts have been deleted.

Sienna, do not try to stir up trouble. Nobody said a word about the children except for YOU.

cherylmurray , 11/14/11 10:21 PM

reread the cmments of Zare- Totally out ofbounds where it is Roger´s role as father is concerned. Those comments are definetely about the twins. Whenever someone is sexualy intimidated the proof is in thevictim not the purpotrator.

When it is about children well the margin is even closer. You choose to let that go. I wonder why? I call upon you to be fair, ofcourse that is usually not the easy way-

Sienna , 11/14/11 10:37 PM

I haven't even read it yet, because I'm too busy babysitting the rest of you sniping at each other and complaining endlessly. Stop accusing me all the time, I'm getting tired of it.

huh! more than 20 comments were removed. come guys you're pushing cheryl's buttons here.
Please chill, I've been enjoying reading comments on this forum for years now, and I really (I'm sure many others too) hope that it stays sensibly professional.
