Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is one win away from playing in front of his French fans for the Paris title. Standing in his way on Saturday is John Isner.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and John Isner will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they battle in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Masters on Saturday.
If this one is anywhere close to as good as their only previous encounter, it won't disappoint. At the 2009 Legg Mason Classic, Isner prevailed 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4) after two hours and 49 minutes of play.
Isner won't want to spend that much time on court again because is coming off a three-set win over David Ferrer while Tsonga got a walkover past Novak Djokovic. If fatigue is not an issue, though, Isner will be dangerous because he is back in fine form after a stellar summer on American hard courts. So far in Paris, the 25th-ranked American has taken out Stanislas Wawrinka (in a third-set tiebreaker), Igor Kunitsyn, and Feliciano Lopez in addition to his upset of Ferrer.
Tsonga has been playing impressive tennis throughout the fall swing. The eighth-ranked Frenchman captured titles in Metz and Vienna, thus making his place in the World Tour Finals a mere formality heading into this week. Prior to his walkover from Djokovic, Tsonga dismissed both Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Andreas Seppi in easy straight sets.
Another entertaining clash should be in the cards and an upset is possible if Isner serves well. Tsonga does not have a particularly strong return so breaks will come at a premium, just as they did during their Washington matchup (a combined 12 of 13 break points saved).
Because Tsonga is perfectly fresh and playing with home-court advantage, look for him to advance to the final after three sets.

WOW, Isner is in all of Tsonga's service games. It appears he'll win this. It's now deuce, ad isner, deuce again, ad Isner, opportunity lost.

It's a great match , but I like the Ga Bulldog to prevail!

What a shame.

Sorry for you scoretracker.

phoenix , 11/12/11 8:04 PM
what a time to double fault. :-)
phoenix , 11/12/11 8:07 PM
Clownga gets the win. Tomorrow he's going down and hard and so is the french crowd (maybe some nadal fans will enjoy the beatdown tomorrow lol).
Sad for Isner but he choked and there's no way around it.
bleck , 11/12/11 8:09 PM
announcer just said that Tsonga is the tough man to beat here, do i see people trembling in their seats now? ;-)
phoenix , 11/12/11 8:10 PM
phoenix, Who, the french crowd because they know tsonga is getting a beatdown tomorrow, free of charge courtesy of Roger Federer. lol
bleck , 11/12/11 8:14 PM
bleck,
Don't count on the Rafans being happy to see the French crowd disappointed for Tsonga. Many of them want Roger to lose more than they want Jo to win. They probably like the French crowd more than Roger.
numero , 11/12/11 9:08 PM
numero, I was just using a little irony. lol
Roger is going to win tomorrow and that's what's important.
bleck , 11/12/11 9:59 PM

So very true (in my case), but what's wrong with that?

Fortunately not all Rafans are as jaundiced about Roger as you are about Rafa...........your view speaks more about the kind of Rafans you hang around, birds of a feather per chance?
This Rafan, for one, couldn't care less who wins today. If Roger wins, I will be happy for him for snagging the one Masters trophy that has eluded him. If Tsonga wins, I will be happy for him because I like him, his personality and his style of play.

Thanks. John is becoming a choker, but not likke Trolicki. He did the same vs. Fish this year at Atlanta, was up a set and a break and let Fish back into the match. I like the big bulldog, and want to see him do well, coz it's good for American tennis. At the moment, John seems to be our only hope coz Querrey has fallen off the charts, but John is also up there in years. He's 3 years younger than Roddick, but Roddick had accomplished much more at John's age.
The upside is that Fed will win this tournament, albeit Tsonga has given him a tough time recently. Also, Tsonga has had a walkover, so he most probably is very fresh, and our old guy could be tired. Anyway, here's hoping ....... MY TV company is having negotiation problems with the Tennis Channel, which means I can't record the match and most probably will not be around to see live streaming. Please post some comments when the match is being played, and give a small synopsis of the match. Thanks.

There is no way Federer will be tired. This is the man who more than anyone knows how to pace himself through the gruelling weeks of the Slams to reach the finals and win most of them. He made his Statement of Intent when he withdrew from the Asian swing to prepare for the end of the season. Winning in Paris is part of that plan - unluckily for Tsonga! Re: the crowd support. Sure they will raise the roof to urge Jo-Wilfred on but they love Roger and will show him more respect than they did for Lopez for example.

ed,
I agree with you completely about Fed. It is absurd to even suggest that Fed would be tired with the draw he has had. Berdych was the first tough opponent he had to face and he had to get past Murray to be there.
I also think you are right about his intentions when he pulled out of the Asian swing. These indoor hard courts are his best surface. This is where he has always excelled, so he prepared by focusing on Basel, Paris and London. It was a smart move.
If Fed had played in the Asian swing, then I might say he could be tired, but he is fresh and playing very good tennis right now. Tsonga will be up against it tomorrow, even with the crowd. They are not the one who will be on the court facing Fed. Tsonga had to struggle to beat Isner, so he is the one who may well be tired. I know that he will try to give it his best, but I think this is Fed's to win.
Nativenewyorker , 11/13/11 11:13 AM
I've never fathomed how betting odds work, but am I right in thinking the money is going on Tsonga for a win? If so, is this the French having a gamble or do they know something we dont.
and btw: spare me the sneers for not understanding betting odds - you can put it down to my age. lol.

Haha! She's back, complaining about Fed's draw? Hej Hey NNY..nice to see you cut the trees down a bit less!
Who has had most rest? Ummmm..walkover Stonga!...
Who had excellent players reaching finals and difficult players to beat? Both players! Gasquet no walkerover is he? Berd no walkerover is he?
More complaining..
Sienna, Go federer yes, let's wish for the tops and the stars.

Whatever happened to the pact made to scroll down past my posts? I wish they did just that, but I guess I can't win, can I? Curiosity is the thing that killed the cat, so watch out. For the first time since joining this site, I felt free to comment on tennis, but it's check mate all over again. Now my point that Fed could be tired is absurd? oh man. First, they all talk of Fed being an old man whose best days are behind him, not to mention our celebration of his wins are like a second coming. So, what happens to old people when they indulge too much? They get tired faster than the younger ones. I'm sure the older folks on this site can identify with what I'm saying. Also, when people, especially athletes, are off the tour for a considerable amount of time, they do need to build up stamina all over again, hence they tire faster, coz building up stamina an d endurance are incremental. I suppose unless one plays or has played sports, then it's impossible to understand my point. If, what I'm saying makes sense to some, how are my comments that could possibly be tired absurd? Note: I said *could*, I didn't say he *will* be tired. Some people just don't know the meaning of the words they use. Anyway, I was talking to bleck, who likes to discuss tennis and Roger. Tennis discussions seem to be an impossibility for those who like to take cheap shots at others, and whose only mission is to start wars. I give up. Anyway, Go Roger, win this so we can celebrate your second coming!
@fleur, well I guess them trees are safe now for the time being. I can't promise not to cut them down, but I'll try. lol. Go Fed!
BTW, Fed's draw is not easy, he has made his draws seem that way throughout his career. Can't say that for others. Perhaps Fed needs to run some more and sweat, sweat, sweat, then people believe he earned his wins and his draws are tough.
@sienna, here's looking forward to No. 1, small steps.

NNY, please do not let the negativity get to you.......................keep your posts and thoughts rolling, I for one enjoy reading your posts.
rafaisthebest , 11/13/11 12:57 PM
NNY: I know, I know. Even positive posts are scoured looking for innuendos but dont forget your promise :-) Anyway the match starts in an hour. By rights it promises to be a good one if Tsonga can muster all his skills as well. He serve was not up to his usual standard yesterday and I was amazed that neither he nor Isner produced more aces. Barely into double figures. My predictions were way off target.
