  • Federer and Berdych battle for Paris final berth

    11/12/11 5:04 AM | Cheryl Murray
Federer and Berdych battle for Paris final berth Roger Federer will take on rival Tomas Berdych as the two men prepare for the World Tour Finals in London.

The head-to-head match-up between Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych leans heavily in Federer’s direction. The Swiss man holds a 9-4 edge over Berdych with a series of 8 wins in a row before Berdych defeated him at the Miami Masters in 2010.

Unfortunately for Federer, Berdych has since become a serious threat. Berdych created a massive upset at Wimbledon with a 4-set win over Federer in the quarterfinals last year. Federer got small revenge later in the season with a victory in Toronto, but the Czech won their only other meeting this year.

Federer is playing confident tennis at the moment. He just won his second title of the year in Basel and his form this week has been impressive, especially in the third round against Richard Gasquet.

Berdych will come into the match with the confidence of upsetting Andy Murray in the quarters and the knowledge that he’s beaten the Swiss in 3 of their last 4 meetings.

    Prediction – Berdych in 3.

Fed 3

Wow. Cheryl is predicting Berdy to get the win. He is playing very well right now, but my concern is how he will bounce back after that tough three setter with Murray. Fed had the easier match with Monaco. Can Berdy keep up that level of play? Fed looks good, but Monaco wasn't going to test him. I think he will raise his level of play.

I can see this going three sets, but I am finding it hard to go against Fed. I think he will get the win.

Federer has had some issues this year against big hitters. Roger should try to vary is game using a lot of slice shots to the backhand. Please Roger don't try to out hit Berdych.

If Jesus Fed shows up (the one from the first 2 rounds) then it's Federer in 2.
Otherwise Federer in 3.

Good luck Roger.

bleck , 11/12/11 8:59 AM

Well I do hope Big Bird doesn't do a big crumble after that marathon yesterday. Fed, although not playing that gr8, had a much easier day.
If yesterday's Berdych shows up, we have a MATCH!

deuce , 11/12/11 9:03 AM

We already DO have a match. Roger lost in straight sets in cincy, and Berdych was injured!

xrf , 11/12/11 9:11 AM

Its impossible to predict Berdy. He has the disconcerting habit of winning when you are expecting him to lose. And losing when you expect him to win. On balance I too believe Federer will win in 3: but I would hate to be accused by Fedfans of jinxing him by saying that!

ed251137 , 11/12/11 9:27 AM

I think first set is really important in this match, and I smell we are going to have a competitive tie-break in the first set .if roger loses the 1st set , he'll lose the whole match . I am sure about that !!!

pnp , 11/12/11 9:31 AM

Cheryl wishes!

Everyone liking jinksing federer.

He's reached SF's..as good as last year, more than can be said for all others.

Whilst I don't think this will be easy, Fed in straights is the plan.

Fleur , 11/12/11 10:29 AM

ed,

You are correct about Berdy. I have found him very unpredictable at times. Just when you think he is going to get the job done, he ends up retiring with some injury or just doesn't bring his "A" game, or even his "B" game at times.

I never make predictions to jinx anybody. I also don't believe in any of that. I call it as I see it. I have no personal issue with Fed. If I think he is playing well and will beat someone, then I say so. He didn't have to play his best against Monaco. I think he will be ready for Berdy.

deuce,

I agree with your last sentence. My thoughts exactly. If the Berdy we saw against Murray does show up, then at least we will get a good match. However, Berdy having to beat Murray was a far more difficult task than Fed taking out Monaco. We will have to see if Berdy can do it again.

Nativenewyorker , 11/12/11 10:32 AM

Almost Roger time.

Good luck Roger. Take the Paris masters at last.

bleck , 11/12/11 2:03 PM

When he calls out Allez after the first break in first game.. I got thrills down my spine.... Normally he is a litle laid back with his come on´s It shows how much it means for him.

Sienna , 11/12/11 2:20 PM

and for the record. It matters more which Roger shows up. Berdys new girlfriend seams to have a good time in Paris. Stupid matches on saturday afternoon....)she thinks'

Sienna , 11/12/11 2:23 PM

hehehe commentators in holland. Itis so beatifull to watch him play this shot running around bh and ripping fh when he still runs around bh. It is so beautifull even if he loses the match. The other commentator replied. When he´s playing like this he´s not gonna lose

anywayz break up first set. still I am prepaired and expecting a thrilla in manilla type of match.

Sienna , 11/12/11 2:29 PM

1set 6-4 20 winners 6 ue... Unbelievable tennis. Berdych is playing very well to keep up withTMF...

Push through for second set!
Allez Roger.

Sienna , 11/12/11 2:58 PM

Federer looks unstoppable. Berdych is trying too hard and overhitting as a result and cant handle Fed's 1:2 when he's receiving serve.

ed251137 , 11/12/11 2:59 PM

Pure class from Fed...simply amazing...

natashao , 11/12/11 3:12 PM

This is the imperious Federer of old. Berdy simply has no answers.

ed251137 , 11/12/11 3:21 PM

Berdych often crushes Fed's second serves, so I fon't mind a few extra double faults from Fed if he's going for it. Backhand working well too...

Bharata , 11/12/11 3:30 PM

And Fed wins the match! He now reached the final of all the master tournaments.... isn't that a record?

Bonker , 11/12/11 3:33 PM

nice one, Fed

RickyDimon , 11/12/11 3:35 PM

WOW, Fed was just fantastic...impressive game...aggresive play, great serving, hitting those corners like it was the easiest thing in life...Berdy looked like a ball boy in this match...

natashao , 11/12/11 3:37 PM

Pretty cool, Roger! :)

xrf , 11/12/11 3:51 PM

WOW! That's why I became a Fed fan! Nobody does it better! He turned back the clock today. That was TMF in full flow. Berdych was serving big, returning well and overall playing above his normal level and Roger still dominated. Hope he can keep this up and win the final.

numero , 11/12/11 3:53 PM

Well done federer! This is the level of play we used to see nearly all the time. simply breathtaking.

tj600 , 11/12/11 4:07 PM

Simply unbelievable stuff from Roger. That was Jesus Fed all the way. Always in control faced 0 BP. And the highlight reel will be superb with some out of this world shots.

Roger seemed cool, calm and collected. Berdych didn't play that bad but Federer was in supreme form.

P.S.: Can't wait for the WTF...

bleck , 11/12/11 4:18 PM

"I would say, and I'm pretty confident to say, that that's the old Roger," said Berdych. "You know, the years that he was really winning everything. We can count the unforced errors that he hit, like maybe, on the fingers on one hand, which is incredible. He started every set really great and just didn't give me any chance at all."

Couldn't have said it better.

bleck , 11/12/11 4:22 PM

true indeed...

natashao , 11/12/11 4:48 PM

I think Berdy's comments, both yesterday after his win and today after the defeat, were exemplary. Utterly genuine and generous to both Andy and Roger.

ed251137 , 11/12/11 4:54 PM

@Bleck, Rog is going to kick some serious butt at the WTF. Can't wait to see him take down the young guns.

scoretracker , 11/12/11 5:26 PM

Just a list of recently broken records by Roger and some records he may break in the tournaments to come. (Whoever may be shocked by the fact that Roger is breaking and will break records please refrain from reading the content below.)

5th Basel title - record
1st player to reach all finals of masters 1000 - record
winning 47 titles on hardcourts (Paris final) - Roger playing for a record
6th WTF title - Roger playing for a record
5th AO - Roger playing for a record (open era)

Scoretracker, Just me saying that had Roger played djokovic in Basel he would have won and had he played murray in Paris he would have won, given the excelent form he's in,led to a barrage of posts that almost made it sound like I had said something bizarre. Go figure...

That's why I want the WTF to come and Roger to kick some ass.

bleck , 11/12/11 6:23 PM

...and how many of those "all finals of masters 1000" did he actually win? maybe this is another record? ;-)

phoenix , 11/12/11 6:40 PM

7 out of 9 hold by Agassi. Roger and Rafa have 6 out of 9.
So maybe equaling another record tomorrow.

Sienna , 11/12/11 7:13 PM

Roger has won 12 HC Masters 1000 titles and 5 clay Masters 1000 titles. Not to mention 5 TMC/WTF which are more important.

numero , 11/12/11 7:16 PM

Sienna, Thanks. Then Roger is playing for tying one record and breaking another one. Cool.

bleck , 11/12/11 7:22 PM

sienna and bleck, please don't forget phoneix, who is playing to get the most boring posts of all time!

Fleur , 11/12/11 7:33 PM

hahaha, but obviously i'm not boring to you coz you bothered to read and reply my dear :-)

phoenix , 11/12/11 7:49 PM

No choose dear :) someone's has to try.

Fleur , 11/12/11 8:30 PM

Incredible performance.

I hope he can keep this pace for the final. Tsonga is more dangerous thatn Berdych.

Emiliano55 , 11/12/11 9:38 PM

Tsonga is erractic - he scraped past Isner by the skin of his teeth because John kept giving him a reprieve each time he was nearly down and out. Federer will be ruthless.
