  • Federer faces Monaco for semifinal spot

    11/11/11 1:46 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer faces Monaco for semifinal spot Roger Federer is three wins away from what would be his first Paris title. Standing in Federer's way of the semifinals is Juan Monaco.

Roger Federer and Juan Monaco will be going head-to-head for the fourth time in their careers and the third time this season when they clash during quarterfinal action at the BNP Paribas Masters on Friday.

Federer has won all of their previous encounters, including two on hard courts earlier this year. The world No. 4 prevailed 7-6(4), 6-4 at the Sony Ericsson Open then absolutely destroyed Monaco 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 in round four of the U.S. Open.

Monaco will be hard-pressed to turn the tide because he is by no means catching his opponent at the right time. Federer is coming off a second consecutive Basel title and he has been rolling in Paris. The fourth-ranked Swiss booked his spot in the quarters with blowout wins over Adrian Mannarino and Richard Gasquet.

At the same time, though, Monaco is playing his best tennis of the season. The 34th-ranked Argentine finished runner-up last week in Valencia and he has bounced back incredibly well despite having virtually no rest in between tournaments. Monaco trounced Donald Young and Gilles Simon then got past Mardy Fish via third-set retirement after saving two match points.

A slow hard court will help Monaco and he should at least be able to get more games in two sets than he did in three sets at the U.S. Open. Nonetheless, his run is going to come to an end as Federer should cruise with minimal trouble

Federer in 2 easy sets.
Don't expect more than 3 games per set by Monaco.

Good luck Roger.

Wow watching commentators in awe of Fed. He has actually a great year just short of Slam winnings. But Fed is just happy with his life and where he is at the moment. So true.
Slams wins is just around the corner.

Monaco is gonna bring the DC to Argentina! EARMARK THIS!

sienna,

It's so good to see you post. You are great, so is bleck and numero. It's stupid really when you gets posters like satsume who accuse in stupid tones/...'oh why no one watching fed match, must be no fans'. Like there are some (me) who want to watch the match from start to finish without silly interrupts from his like spoiling the match. It's what they wants to do all the time, and then say we gets on thier nerves!

Not bothering answering.

Federer did well and enjoyed watching him play.

Good luck to him in SF. He holds his points now.

If federer gets past berdych he will have a possible tough match in the final against Isner isner has a chance of winning this event now

Isner's return game is poor and it shows whenever he plays against Fed or better returners. If Isner can do some more work on his return of serve and some other little intangibles, I think he will be able to obtain more top 4 wins, with hi serve being the main weapon. As of now, I give Fed the edge and think he'll win. However, I wouldn't mind seeing Isner take the trophy as he needs a boost, which an MS win will give him.

Albeit, I love Fed and like to see him win, I also like our American players and wish them well, American tennis has taken a nose-dive and needs some infusion of wins to help our declined position in the tennis world. Our past No.1, Roddick, poor guy, has been struggling with mono for about 18 months, and can't seem to get back on track. I wish him well., coz he never uses it as an excuse for his losses due to his health. Contrast that to the likes of Novak and a few others in the top 4, who use injury for every loss. If Isner can't beat Fed, then I hope Roger wins this one, as it will do wonders for him coz he's also not had a good year thus far.

Federer wasn't at his best this match. He will need to rise his level just as he did against Roddick/Gasquet if he plans to get past Berdych/Tsonga.

Emiliano55 , 11/11/11 11:58 PM

Where are all the Fed fans? Oh right, busy attacking Rafa, Murray and Nole and their fans on other topic threads.

I thought Fed did enough to get the win, but didn't look all that great. He will need to step it up for the semis. Monaco doesn't have the weapons to trouble him that much.

Nativenewyorker , 11/12/11 12:47 AM

The big flat hitters like Berdych and Tsonga often trouble Fed, they attack his forehand a lot when he tries to protect his backhand. So you often see Fed running and hitting squash shots on his forehand side. This kind of happened in Cinncinatti this year, I think that was a 2 setter for Berdych...I hope Fed can at least get a set. Actually the court being slower might help Federer vs Berdych, I don't know...

Bharata , 11/12/11 12:56 AM

I see the off topic is still ongoing from those who consider themselves to be the privileged few here, yet they're the ones who feel they should remind others of staying on topic..

Considering only 4 of Fed fans post regularly, I think that snide comment was pure rhetoric and aimed to take a cheap shot at Fed fans. Too bad some can't get out of the mire.

scoretracker , 11/12/11 1:18 AM

Only four..........it seems like a lot more but maybe that's because they make so many comments.
