Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is one win away from a spot in the Paris quarterfinals. Tsonga is set to face Andreas Seppi on Thursday.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Andreas Seppi will be doing battle for the third time in their careers when they meet in round three of the BNP Paribas Masters on Thursday.
The head-to-head series is tied up at one win apiece and both previous encounters have come on hard courts. Seppi prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the 2008 Sydney event but Tsonga scored a 6-3, 7-6(1), 7-6(5) victory in the second round of this year's Australian Open.
Ten months later, Tsonga finds himself on the verge of World Tour Finals qualification. The eighth-ranked Frenchman boasts a 50-21 record for his 2011 campaign and he is especially heating up right now. Tsonga owns two titles this fall (Metz and Vienna) and he handled Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday.
Seppi is already in the midst of one of his best weeks of the season. The 46th-ranked Italian went through qualifying over the weekend and in main-draw action he has dismissed Nikolay Davydenko and Nicolas Almagro, both in straight sets. Seppi is a respectable 25-23 at the ATP level for the year.
A rock-solid baseliner, Seppi will give himself a chance in this match and a relatively slow hard court should help his effort. Tsonga, though, is in stellar form and he will be playing inspired tennis in front of his home fans. Look for the No. 6 seed to book a quarterfinal spot in straight sets.
