  • Murray and Roddick in round of 16 blockbuster

    11/10/11 4:48 AM | Cheryl Murray
Murray and Roddick in round of 16 blockbuster It will be the battle of the Andys on Thursday as Andy Murray and Andy Roddick clash for the eleventh time.

Andy Roddick hasn’t beaten Andy Murray many times in their career meetings. The Scot holds a 7-3 head-to-head edge over Roddick. But the last match Roddick won was a big one. The American upended Murray on home soil at Wimbledon in 2009 in the semifinals.

The bad news for world No. 15 Roddick is that Murray is playing some of the best tennis of his career right now. The Scot has won the last three tournaments he’s entered and the way he’s been returning probably spells trouble for Roddick and his big first serve.

Prediction – In order for Roddick to have even a chance at the upset of the No. 2 seed, he’ll have to serve out of his mind and hope for Murray to go off the boil on the return. Murray in straight sets.

Oh boy. Only 3 points into it and Roddick looks like he's counting the seconds to the off season...

Go easy on the hyperbole, will ya Cheryl?......A-rod is a bit of a boiled turnip these days, ain't he?

The only way Muzza loses is if his buttock seizes up..............

Murray looking very sharp here. Can't wait to see a Murray/Fed semifinal, followed by Murray/Nole final, hopefully.

Hardly a "battle" more like a rout!
Look out world, here comes Mr Magic Murray!

Go AndyM, superb, more please :)

If this doesn't get better soon, I think Roddick will retire next year. On an indoor HC I don't think he can take these beatings even by Roger and Murray. After he retires from the ATP I think we'll see him promptly join the Senior tour though.

AndyR shall probably finish when all of his contracts expire,
He still a big personality in the Sport (particularly in England & the US).
I mean if it works for some of the women, why not?
He's had a great career, when you consider his limitations.

Roddick is also popular in China. Why would he want to retire soon I don't understand. Guys like Ferrero, Davy and Hewitt are still playing. Roddick can still win some titles, may not be big ones though, but as long as he enjoys playing, then why not? He's inside top twenty and still making good money too.

luckystar , 11/10/11 4:44 PM

^^^Does he still enjoy playing is the question. Andy is a proud guy. He's made good endorsement money plus he has a wealthy wife so don't think money is a problem. If he doesn't improve I think we'll see him as a commentator and on the Senior tour starting in 2013. Eventually a Davis Cup captain for sure.

A Rod has a lot of personality & a great sense of humour (maybe that's how he bagged Brooklyn). Of-court.
On it, he seems to becoming even more brattish & curmudgeonly.
When he retires I do believe it shall be for the best for him.
Oh and the Linespeople, umpires, ballkids, racquets etc & so on...
He's got a great broadcasting future ahead of him however.

AndyM's had to have treatment for a hamstring injury which he says may have been caused by the early start this morning. :(

This was one match I actually got to see, given that it wasn't too far into the wee hours of the morning. It was painful to see Roddick jerked around by Murray. He just does not have the game anymore to challenge the top players.

It's not for anyone to decide for Roddick when he should retire. He may win some lesser titles and if he healthy and enjoys playing and can accept where he's at, then there is no reason why he can't play on a bit more. It's annoying to read people saying he should get out for his own pride. Many other successful players have continued on long beyond their prime. I hope that Roddick plays as long as he wants to and retires when he feels it's time.

No, no no, would only want Tsonga to win, if Andy doesn't get to the final...;)
