  • Federer battles Gasquet for Paris quarterfinal spot

    11/10/11 4:38 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer battles Gasquet for Paris quarterfinal spot Familiar foes Roger Federer and Richard Gasquet are set for another meeting on Thursday, this time at the Paris Masters. A place in the quarterfinals will be on the line.

Roger Federer and Richard Gasquet will be going head-to-head for the 11th time in their careers and for the third time this season when they do battle in round three of the BNP Paribas Masters on Thursday.

Federer has won eight of their 10 previous encounters, including all four of their hard-court contests. The Swiss prevailed 6-2, 7-5 earlier this year in Dubai but Gasquet won their most recent meeting 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4) on the clay courts of Rome.

Another upset victory appears unlikely because Gasquet has not played much tennis of late. The 20th-ranked Frenchman is just 3-2 since the U.S. Open, but he looked good in a 6-4, 7-6(4) dismissal of Kevin Anderson on Tuesday. Gasquet, who reached the semis of this event in 2007 and lost to Federer in round two last season, owns a 34-19 record for his 2011 campaign.

Federer is heating up at the end of what has been a slam-less, relatively disappointing season by his lofty standards. The world No. 4 captured a second straight Basel title last week and he trounced Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday to improve his 2011 record to 55-12.

Gasquet has home-court advantage in France and the relatively slow courts will help his effort (he has defeated Federer twice on clay). Nonetheless, he appears to be catching his opponent at the wrong time. With Federer in fine form, look for the favorite to advance after two entertaining sets.

again single handers. SO beautiful.
All the kids at tennis learn a doublehander these days. The single hander will dreadfully be missed in a decade or so.

Sienna, No doubt. It's a much more beautiful shot.
