  • Fish faces Mayer, Troicki takes on Stakhovsky

    11/9/11 4:09 AM | Ricky Dimon
Fish faces Mayer, Troicki takes on Stakhovsky Mardy Fish is going up against Florian Mayer on Wednesday at the Paris Masters. Viktor Troicki and Sergiy Stakhovsky are also looking for a place in the third round.

    (7) Mardy Fish vs. Florian Mayer

Fish and Mayer will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers when they do battle in the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters on Wednesday. The head-to-head series stands at 2-1 in Fish's favor, including 2-0 on hard courts. They most recently faced each other at Wimbledon in 2010, when Mayer scored a 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

While Fish is the more consistent player, the two contestants are going in opposite directions now. Mayer, a quarterfinalist at the Shanghai Masters, is 45-25 for the season after ousting Radek Stepanek on Monday. Fish has cooled off since another blistering summer on the American hard courts. The ninth-ranked American is 3-3 since the U.S. Open and riding a three-match losing streak. Look for the relatively slow court to pace Mayer to a three-set win.

    (Q) Sergiy Stakhovsky vs. (15) Viktor Troicki

The story is somewhat similar in the first-round matchup between Troicki and Stakhovsky. Troicki, like Fish, has enjoyed his best year on tour but he is struggling to the finish line. Only five of the 19th-ranked Serb's 39 victories have come since the end of the U.S. Open Series and he has dropped nine of his last 14 matches. Stakhovsky finds himself down at 63rd in the world, but he qualified for the Paris main draw then ousted Kei Nishikori in straight sets on Tuesday.

This is the fourth career encounter between Troicki and Stakovsky (all on hard courts), with Troicki leading the head-to-head series 2-1. They squared off to begin this year in Doha, where Troicki prevailed 6-4, 7-5. Stakhovsky's lone victory came at the 2008 Zagreb event. Troicki is the favorite on paper, but Stakhovsky should be the one playing with confidence so look for this one to result in an upset.

I go with Cheryl's predictions.

In the last quarter of the year, with so many players struggling to cross the finish line, the H2H stats have less relevance than the most recent form.

Fish looks certain for the last place at the WTF and he'll not want to kill himself at Bercy. So quite possibly even a straight sets win for Mayer.

Stakhosvsky finished off Nishikori with ease yesterday and should do the same with a jaded Troicki.
