World No. 5 David Ferrer is set to highlight second-round play at the BNP Paribas Masters, as he faces qualifier Nicolas Mahut. The two will be contesting their first career meeting early Wednesday.
Fourth seed David Ferrer returns to competition following a semifinal loss to Juan Monaco in Valencia. The 29-year-old Spaniard will attempt to record his 55th match win of the season.
Ferrer is twice a quarterfinalist at the BNP Paribas Open, having advanced to the final eight in 2005 and 2008.
Mahut began the tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.
The Frenchman looks to win consecutive tour-level matches for the first time since late September, when he booked a quarterfinal berth in Metz.
Prediction: Ferrer in straight sets.

Always love watching David play. He's more than holding his own in spite of a dismal first serve% and is showing up the weaknesses in Mahut's game (all serve and not much else).
